AEBS 802.11n, Crashing while using bittorrent

Hi, I have recently purchased an AEBS 802.11n (gigabyte ed. and using the 7.2.1 firmware) and am experiencing some problems using bittorrent.

First off, I use azureus for my torrents, and with my former linksys router I had no issues. However since purchasing the AEBS I have tried multiple torrents now, and seemingly randomly during the transfer I loose wired/wireless connectivity to my router and am unable to restore it. When looking at the actual base station though the status light is still green, but going through my mbp the device will not appear when I scan for base stations. The only way to fix this problem is to unplug/replug the router.

This happened with the first AEBS and thinking it may be an error with the actual router, I returned it. However, after unpacking the new one, configuring it... I am having the exact same issue. I haven't experienced the router crashing any other times outside of using bittorrent, so I am unable to pinpoint whether this is something random or not. However it is almost a sure bet that letting azureus run for a few minutes will crash it. Furthermore upon restarting the router, all of its logs seem to clear so I can't even begin to troubleshoot this.

I can't see how a $60 linksys router is able to outperform this very nice offering from apple, and I really would like to see this problem fixed. I hope this doesn't come down to tweaking some rare setting in the bittorrent client as I have many people that use my network weekly and it will be an increasable pain to take them through some unique setup which should not be required.

If anyone has any ideas let me know, I am fairly competition with computers and networking issues and willing to do whatever is needed to fix this. Thanks in advance.

I too was experiencing seizures of my gigabit AEBS when using Azureus for bit torrent downloads. I have solved my problem by rolling back to firmware version 7.2 - the directions on how to do that are posted here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305301

How to manually download and install previous (earlier) versions of firmware

1. Open AirPort Utility.
2. From AirPort Utility menu, hold the Option key (Control key in Windows XP and Vista) and choose Check for Updates....
3. Select (place a check mark beside) the version you require.
4. Click Download.
5. Select your base station then choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
6. From the Base Station menu choose Upload Firmware....
7. Select a firmware version and click OK.

I have had perfectly stable wired and wireless internet connections and good bit torrent downloads since rolling back. Hope this works for everyone else, and I hope that the next firmware revision is fixed. Don't trash your AEBS units just yet...

Hotrodjohn,

I rolled back my firmware to 7.2 (don't know why I didn't think of that before) as you suggested.

The AEBS still crashes with Azureus, but the crash seems to be different now. With 7.2 the network is still visible and still works, BUT the AirDisk (the USB hard drive attached to the AEBS) still disappears without a clean unmount from the MBP I'm using to connect wirelessly to the AirDisk. This causes the Finder and any other apps using the AirDisk to hang for long periods of time (like 10 minutes) until they figure out what's up.

Weirdly, the AirDisk doesn't crash permanently on the Mac Mini I've got connected directly to the AEBS through the Ethernet LAN port. It does crash temporarily, though, causing Azureus to freak out and give me the little dark-red "dead face" for torrents that were active at the time.

Azureus is using the AirDisk to store its torrent files and uploaded/downloaded files.

I just spent the entire weekend going crazy with this exact issue. Returned my AEBS and the new one does the same thing. I use Azureus and did not realize this was the issue. I'm going to try some of the suggestions on here tonight.

1 thing to add....sometimes the light on the front turns off completely. most of the time is turns solid green(I have it set to flash of activity).

Hello All,

I encourage you all to take nh7a's suggestion and report a bug to the link below. I just did it myself. Maybe with enough people affected, Apple will look into the matter.

Question: Has anyone tired reverting back to firmware 7.2 as suggested by Ian Quinn? Any success? I haven't tried myself yet but I intend to. Would just like to hear if there are other success stories.

Thanx

I want to weigh in. I am having this problem with my AEBS, but I am also having it with Netgear's competing router. I also found a link listing a dozen other routers that have this issue, and common fixes have emerged. I feel the frustration of those that introduced this problem by upgrading to apple's router, but this is in no way an apple-only issue.

Here are some suggested fixes - unconfirmed to work (I tried all of them at once and left a med sized torrent downloading overnight and it was ok)

Usual solution section was helpful (I think)

I am having similar problems with my AEBS 802.11n (Gb) set up as well, however, I'm not even downloading any torrents, I'm trying to download podcasts and music straight from the iTunes music store.
I've got the cable modem to the AEBS with a LaCie HD hooked up to a powered USB hub which is connected to the AEBS. I store all my music on the LaCie HD, and keep the iTunes Music Library and xml files on my laptop. The disk mounts fine. I can see and play music fine. I can drag files from my desktop to the iTunes window, and it will copy the file correctly to the location on the LaCie HD, but anytime I try to download music from the iTMS or a podcast from it, it begins the download, then halfway through the download, everything STOPS. Any thoughts? Anyone with torrent issues have a similar issue with iTunes?

With Transmission, the max number of connections is 60 -- they say you don't really need more than that. I tried throttling back Azurues, but that program has too many advanced options I simply don't care about. Where does one turn off UPnP on the AEBS? I already manually mapped a port, I think. I feel like I'm starting to know less and less...or maybe it's just this cold I'm suffering.

For those with even a limited amount of success, please post the steps you took to get to that point.
