Display of dark images/video

Just got my iPod Touch this afternoon. Was very excited and immediately started testing everything on it. However, I was very disappointed with the way it displays blacks and dark images in video and photos. A friend's iPhone didn't seem to have this problem. Saw a thread in the iPhone forums where someone complained and another person said theirs looked great. Did I get a bad unit? Anyone else experiencing this? Thanks for replies.

i totally sympathize. Even though I've been lucky so far with the 6 iPods we own (knock on wood), I don't feel my luck would hold if I were to drive the 4 blocks to the Apple store and purchase this new Touch. It seems riddled with problems, and some here are convinced that updates will fix all the issues. I'm not so sure and I'm not a betting man. I'll wait until a replacement model has addressed all of the current issues, and I'll monitor the boards here for comments from those who have bought the next model. EVENTUALLY, I'd expect apple to produce a model that works properly (or am i expecting too much? after all, they are made in China)

ah, because its Apple's policy to not be very consumer friendly??? I've had much better customer service from Amazon and was able to get a full refund for a Mini when the 2nd gen came out 2 weeks after i bought my wife the first gen, which suffered from short battery life and wimpy case colors. Her mini is still going strong after a couple of years!

Had my appointment today with a 'genius' at the Apple store on Santa Fe in the Denver area.

The genius, who would not take his sunglasses off while looking at the display had another Apple employee 'swap it' when he said he did not see a problem.

He went into the back and as they didn't have any more Touches said 'well that's just how the display on the iPod Touch is, it's not the same as the iPhone'. I pointed out to him that in Job's keynote speech he said that it WAS the same display as the iPhone and that I was very disappointed as I couldn't even watch movies on the thing.

He agreed to let me return it and waive the restocking fee, but only after I argued with him a bit about how I shouldn't have to pay a restocking fee on an obviously defective product.

I have since purchased a replacement from Best Buy. The Best Buy unit came in a much lighter colored box than the 1st one and has a completely different serial number prefix.

I will post thoughts once it's synch'd up.

I have both an 8gb iphone and one day old ipod touch 16gb. I have followed the posts about the screens on both these forums and others. I wanted to post that I have run the two side by side showing movies, pictures, music videos and anything else I can think of for over an hour. With both my wife and I staring at the two screen side by side we cannot notice the "negative" efffect people are seeing. In fact if we couldn;t see the actual devices we'd be hard pressed to identify which one was which. I thought I would post this as I guess it means there are some good ones out there. If I can help anyone by doing something or answering questions I'd be happy to.

Good luck to everyone and I hope the problems are worked out,

Hey Paul, thanks for the side by side comparison post. Good to know there are units out there that are indistinguishable from the iphone, which seems to be most people's benchmark. I will likely be comparing my touch to a friend's this weekend and probably another friend's iphone, as well. I believe the second touch I got yesterday is one of the "good ones", but I want to make sure. I feel that since we all paid our $300 - $400 we should all get the same experience with the product.

I agree with David.

A lot of the in-store employees, NOT ALL but most, think they know it all and try and make you feel like your crazy for noticing a problem with one of their products. I'm a picky person and need to have a liberal return policy. Although I do have one story where I was returning an ACD to an Apple Store. I knew that I would have to pay a restocking fee and was ready to! The manager, without me asking, waved the restocking fee even though she said the issue I was returning it for was considered normal. I was floored that she waved it simple because I was unsatisfied! IT WAS GREAT! I wish they would be like this all the time!

Well as I posted earlier, I returned from the Apple store today at 1pm, they took back my ipod touch and waived my restocking fee. I quickly found a best buy with ipod touches in stock in Brooklyn. I ordered online, and just got home with the iPod.

So far its synching and I can't really test it until I play movies, but I remember that when my original touch was synching, the battery shadow looks like a negative, on this ipod it does not.

Once I finish synching, I will watch a video and tell you guys if Best Buy iPod's are a better bet than Apple ipods, because it seems that people getting it from Best Buy are getting it from a different stock of Apple as far as I see.

_Comparing Two Different Touch Units:_

I now have two units, (with the same settings and same movie (Aeon Flux), side by side. One is from the Apple store and the other from Best Buy. I'm not certain how different the prefix of the Serial Numbers should be, to indicate it is from a different manufacturing batch or manufacturer all together. Unfortunately in my case, the number on both units is identical on the first five numbers, (9C737).

The one from the *Apple store* has terrible black quality. *When looked at straight on*, most dark scenes blacks have total loss of detail giving a negative like effect. (Example: Charlize Theron's black hair doesn't look like hair, it look's more like one aggregate shadow or a helmet. You can't see strands of hair.) *When looked at with an angle*, the black details improve, but this view then throws off all the other colors hue and saturation. As a further note, it seems the best angular view, when in the landscape position, is to tilt back the upper left-hand corner. I attribute this to the fact that the picture looks best not straight on, but with the top of the unit tilted back and tilting the upper left hand corner back is an averaging of the portrait and landscape position.

The one from *Best Buy* has improved black quality. *When looked at straight on*, there is a semi-black negative effect but not as dramatic as the one from the Apple store and you can see minor details of the image. *When looked at with an angle*, just like the Apple store one, the image improves, but with this one you don't have to angle it as much, thus the other colors hue and saturation aren’t thrown off as much.

I think it is worth mentioning that it might be better to purchase from Best Buy opposed to Apple, as I think their return policies are better as well as their extended warranty plan. Oh yes, and as I mentioned in a previous post my iPod nano unit has none of these display problems.
