Display of dark images/video

Just got my iPod Touch this afternoon. Was very excited and immediately started testing everything on it. However, I was very disappointed with the way it displays blacks and dark images in video and photos. A friend's iPhone didn't seem to have this problem. Saw a thread in the iPhone forums where someone complained and another person said theirs looked great. Did I get a bad unit? Anyone else experiencing this? Thanks for replies.

Interesting. I bought my 16g at the Apple Store in Newton MA Thursday and it doesn't seem to have this problem either...

One thing I did notice, comparing the same video file on the 16g and my better half's 8g iPhone was that the Touch does seem to have a slightly more limited viewing angle- as you're holding it widescreen mode and rotate it on its horizontal access, some of the black/negative issues do become apparent, but it's certainly no better or worse than other small/thin video players out there. (Better Half didn't notice a difference. At all.) And I looked at a lot before I decided to buy the Touch.

I'm 100% satisfied with my unit.

ok. this may end up being an issue that is coupled with how sensitive certain people are to it. i see this problem on every ipod touch i look at. others i show the same screen and they just don't see it, they also just don't get it until i point it out. i don't think this is so much a batch issue as it is a universal problem. it will take apple implementing a different lcd. i think it's going to be a 'can you live with it' thing or is it a deal-breaker.

Right. I've looked at a bunch (in an attempt to find one better than mine), they all had slightly varied degrees of this same problem. And I don't think anyone has gotten a replacement and said the problem was totally gone, just a bit better, which could've been affected by outside lighting at the time, or something. This will be a problem that won't go away anytime soon. I am guessing that apple just thought that everyone would be so blown away that they would let this slide.

I have been following this fourm about the displays for a while but still went to the Indy Best Buy to take may chances with the display. I figured I could leave some comments on what I have found. Getting home I found that when I tried to power it on I got some test mode which shows several feartures (ie. touch, temp, speaker serial ( w/ a Cheerios Icon (sweet))) etc. Does anybody but me feel as if it wasn't meant to be. Are they in that big of a hurry to get these out the door... Obviously I will be returning this...

I purchased a touch from the Indy AppleStore first thing Friday morning and am having this issue to a moderate degree. I called them this morning and they do not expect any more in for a while. So I stopped by my local Best Buy and picked up another 16GB touch. I'll post in a little bit if there is any difference and which one I'm returning.

I just got back from the Apple store on 5th Avenue.

They looked at my iPod Touch, and saw the black problem. At first he thought it was because I had pirated movies on it, but I showed him some pictures, and coverflow, he compared it to iPhone and decided I was right.

They had none left in the Apple store on 5th avenue, so they returned my all my money and I will try calling some circuit citys and best buys to see if they have them in stock. They have a 30 day return policy, so I will try there and if I get another screen issue, I can return it.

I just watched a very dark scene from beginning of the movie "V for Vendetta" on both my AppleStore and Best Buy touches. While a bit subjective, it seems the BB touch looks as bright at the default middle brightness as my AppleStore touch on full brightness.
Using the same video synced to both, it was clear to see the "negative" effect on the AppleStore touch only. The BB touch looked fine and did not have the problem - using the same video. As such I will be returning my AppleStore touch this evening.

Well while looking at mine some more. I also realized that it has a dead pixel or "White pixel in it too" I am so bummed because I drove nearly 2 hours through Chicago traffic to get mine yesterday. Now I have to go back. I will send a pic to someone who may want to post it. I dont have a source to post.
This issues is spreading over the internet faster then Senator Craig's airport prefrences!
It is funny to me because I had to return two Iphones Becuase of AT&T's poor signal (where I live) way outside of Chicago. Now this. ARGGHHHHHH
