Just got my iPod Touch this afternoon. Was very excited and immediately started testing everything on it. However, I was very disappointed with the way it displays blacks and dark images in video and photos. A friend's iPhone didn't seem to have this problem. Saw a thread in the iPhone forums where someone complained and another person said theirs looked great. Did I get a bad unit? Anyone else experiencing this? Thanks for replies.
Played around with the touch a little. Strangely enough, mine only has the black display problem in the dark; the problem goes away in lit rooms. It seems to be linked to the way the backlight is lighting the screen, or so it seems. Also, tilting it horizontally (so the home button is closer to my face when playing video) seems to fix the problem.
Man, I hope this is fixable, love the device, don't want to have to bring it back. =(
Hey I believe i got the same problem as everone else but not as bad. I looked at pictures posted and mine isnt as bad but I just might exchange it. Dont know yet. Also for reference I bought mine at The Mall of America, MN
It's not so much a question of 'lighter blacks'. It's that the blackest blacks are actually having a negative effect, like if you look at the old ipod videos (or other lcds) from an extreme angle.
p.s. - add another to the pile that is having this problem
I picked up the Ipod touch in the Denver, CO Cheery Creek store today and I'm having the same dark negative black like issues as many others. I also have the new Ipod nano and it does NOT have these issues. I ran the same video scene on my HD 30 inch Cinema Display, Ipod touch and Ipod nano and this problem only occurs on the Ipod touch. As such, I reserved an appointment with the genius bar tomorrow to remedy this problem. Even if they're willing to exchange, I may wait for future shipments, once this problem has been corrected. I don't see the logic in swapping out a device from the same shippment.
This launch was a disaster from day 1. It seems like Apple launched the iPod Touch out the door as fast as they could instead of doing the things they needed to release a quality product.
The genius bar person had not yet seen a touch, and based on "selling thousands with no problems" assumed mine was the fault of the video I used (which I purchased from iTunes). I gave them the benefit of the doubt, and after lots of resets and updates, the rep agreed the video had a problem "just like some 5G video ipods had." She offered to replace it immediately from genius bar stock, which could be refurbished, or offer a 100% credit for a replacement. I opted for the replacement but since none were in stock I am out of luck for now.
I will push for a straight return since I am traveling for two weeks and do not want to keep waiting for a replacement by calling the store daily.
After all was said and done I discovered a single unit near the ipod classics. The unit demonstrated exactly the same symptoms. I am afraid to keep pushing my luck and opening new boxes. They offered to let me open it in the store to test it before taking it home, but how many will they let me open????
Return please... I'll be back when they fix the issue.
Oh, and now my video playback is corrupt - showing pinks and greens where it should be normal. Yeehaa.
I hope you're right and it's as simple as waiting for the 2nd or 3rd batch to clear up the problem. Any ideas how long it will be before they are shipping products from the 2nd or 3rd batch? Are we talking 2 weeks from now?...2 months from now? I don't know so if anyone could give me an idea as to how long I would appreciate it.
I think that is a polarizing problem of display...if you tilt a screen LCD TFT on different clock wise o inverse tilt you can see diferences...
In other site some peoples said that the IpoT have the screen mounted inverse vs iphone....probably an hardware problem during assembling...
I've ordered via applestore here in italy, will be in my hand @ 2 oct...I hope that my unit will be ok...
I hope this turn to become a 'more features = degraded overall components' trend with Apple as it did with the history of their MBP displays. I was really looking forward to this purchase after seeing the iPhone. But now it leads me to believe that if you want to own a quality Apple product indeed, wait a year or 2 revisions.
I guess I would just pay more (and feel better) if their products were MADE in USA or JAPAN rather than just being 'designed in California'. Anyone can design/spec anything from anywhere. Assemblage however, is a something that becomes 'pride-driven'. No offense, but the Chinese simply don't have this (and why should they for the wages they get that results in the lack of good supervision/quality control) or at least it leads me to suspect this.
IMHO, they shouldn't have released the touch yet with the history of inconsistencies in quality of displays due to different mfgs that they've had. I'm afraid Apple will start to build a reputation of _expected inconsistencies_ in product quality as a result of using different component mfg'ing. Next thing you know we'll be requesting or exchanging until we get an iPod touch with a display made with serials that begin with a certain prefix.
What a nightmare that was and perhaps will be, again.
This is really starting to worry me. Surely they have realised what is going on by now. They must have had hundreds returned. I hope the batch shipped to the UK is good or they delay the 'pre-release' to fix the screens.
Just a thought. Has anyone tried sending the video to an external display from the ipod to see wether the problems persist on the external screen. Surely this would clear up the hardware/software debate.
mmm...I think that apple use right now a good components in his ipod or mac as well...you know right now that LCD panel is very very good also in economy Panels because the tecnology is go on in these years...
past years if you purchase an LCD panel, was a dead pixel and polarizing angle problems...right now if you get a economy LCD, is really good compared with old LCD and there are not pixel dead...you can see the LCD and HD TV...the prices is now moore low...
I continue to know that there are a inverted polarize LCD...I've an PAlm Tungsten T5, and the LCD is near to the iphone or ipodT, if I look the screen inverted, rotate of 180° or -180° you can see diferences...because the LCD tecnology have a ONEWAY polarization light...
If you seen a Apple MacBook, you can see that the illumination come from BOTTOM of the screen...if you try to look the screen rotate of 180° you go out from polarizing angle...and you seen inverted image, black inverted etc etc..
I hope for a Italian Stock are ok...if Apple see that many units are coming back to wherehouses...they make something about this issue...
ps: a question: Apple tech staff read this forum???????
Anyway I don't think that the problem can be fixed with an firmware upgrade, this is a hardware LCD problem as well...
It would be nice to see a defective iPod touch screen next to a good iPod touch screen. Just to see the differences people are talking about with the replacements.
