Just got my iPod Touch this afternoon. Was very excited and immediately started testing everything on it. However, I was very disappointed with the way it displays blacks and dark images in video and photos. A friend's iPhone didn't seem to have this problem. Saw a thread in the iPhone forums where someone complained and another person said theirs looked great. Did I get a bad unit? Anyone else experiencing this? Thanks for replies.
David, I understand your interpretation of my last post. And you are partially correct. I'm still withholding complete judgment until I use it some more. Like I said, it is a drastic improvement over the one I returned.
I've got the same problem here in sunny Southern California - as does one of my friends in Hawaii - so it's everywhere. I think the tolerance levels are different for different people, that's why some think they have it and others don't.
Those who haven't noticed yet will probably do so over the weekend.
Hopefully they'll come up with a solution to make everyone happy because you can't watch videos with the display the way it is currently.
I look forward to hearing the results of everyone's trips to see their respective "geniuses" tomorrow.
I've been looking at some pictures on Flickr.com that looked terrible on my old Touch. They look great on the new one. So, David, I'm giving this one a far more positive review.
I'm having the same issue with my Touch. It's generally not too glaring but in dark scenes it's extremely distracting. Unfortunately, I won't have time to go back out to the Apple Store this weekend. I hope Apple takes note of this issue and offers a fix for it.
i just got mine today and also have the "dark negative" effect going on. I am hoping that some Firmware/Software solution arrives soon or I will be taking mine back for a replacement.
Zero issues exchanging it, Sergey (and group). And I specifically asked about returning the new one if I was unhappy with it. Again, no problem. They weren't helpful, because they don't really know what they're doing with these things yet - the genius hadn't even seen one close up until mine. He agreed with me about the deficiencies in the screen. So swap was easy.
Now I'm nervous - ordered my iTouch online and it will get tossed onto my porch by the courier in a few weeks time (CDN release date 28 Sep). Since I bought it online, +with engraving+, I'll be dead in the water wrt replacement if I get a unit with the faulty black rendering problem. And I live less than 8 kms (5 miles in American) from Apple's Canada HQ, how ironic this may be!
I hope the Apple QC folks in the Chinese factory will have fixed this production bug with our shipments, or that it may be fixed with a patch (less confident that it is), or a burn in issue (least convincing suggestion).
Thanks for the posted pics and comments. Good luck with your exchanges.
This isn't nice. I was really excited for this. Since I don't live never an Apple Store my grandfather is suppose to pick me up over at the Staten Island mall store. He would have gotten one today but they didn't have any 16 gb models in. I think I may hold off to get one until they hopefully fix this issue. Does it effect the menu screen though? I know that the home screen is a solid black so why isn't it messing with that? Whatever it is it has to be fixed. I'm not spending $400 on a device to get a bad screen.
I also read the PCMag review of the iPod and they didn't mention anything of the viewing problem. They just said that the iPhones look a tad bit better. I think a big issue like this would have been mentioned. I wish we could get some sort of response.
WOW. Thanks for the info! I order it from the online Apple Store but cancelled it after hearing your stories and seeing some of those images. I'll wait till I can see it in person! THANK YOU!
I have mine currently ordered at Best Buy. Anyone know Genius policy if I want to get mine exchanged at the Apple Store in Indy? Are they going to give me much crap if I try to return at the apple store when I bought it at Best Buy?
I can't understand what people are complaining about. I actually find the touch screen MUCH brighter than the iPhone. Of course with a brighter screen comes slightly lighter blacks. You can't have it both ways.
Why is Apple having these screen problems with the touch display? Video on the ipod video and new nano look great. not "black" problem at all. Very strange.
Timbro, be glad to have received a Touch with a well-made screen. I'm jealous of you that you don't know what we've been talking about with our Touches.
