Just got my iPod Touch this afternoon. Was very excited and immediately started testing everything on it. However, I was very disappointed with the way it displays blacks and dark images in video and photos. A friend's iPhone didn't seem to have this problem. Saw a thread in the iPhone forums where someone complained and another person said theirs looked great. Did I get a bad unit? Anyone else experiencing this? Thanks for replies.
My appointment is at 10:40 Pacific time - so in just under 2 hours. From all the posts I've been reading, I can't say I'm hopeful that it is only our units. Looks pretty widespread. Fingers crossed it only looks that way because the people actually enjoying their new iPods are too busy playing to post.
Alright, good luck. If there is any silver lining, Apple probably uses more than one OEM for their displays. Some people have reported to have good screens. So we may just be looking at one bad manufacturer out there. I've been a bit disappointed with Apple's quality control these days, but their service is always top-notch. I'm hopeful that we can all get units with screens that are more acceptable. Thanks for taking the first plunge.
I purchased my unit yesterday evening in Chandler, AZ and immediately found the screen issue watching the first movie I tried. Ironically it was a movie I purchased from iTunes.
If there is no software workaround, I will be returning my unit. The quality is not acceptable for a video/photo device. Not sure about an exchange until I am assured the new unit is better.
I did notice that on my unit the blacks improve if I tilt the device forward. But the tilt is so great that the other colors wash out and reflections kick in. I hope this is just a contrast setting.
My fear is that the contrast was preset to compensate for a hardware selection decision so that the home screen looks deep black, or some other aspect that would be less impressive if the black levels were functioning normally.
Well there have not been THAT many complaints, so I am hoping its just us, and the mac geniuses wont make a fuss.
I have 300, pirates of the Caribbean 1 and 2, and v for vendetta, all set to dark scenes, just to show them tomorrow what I mean, it looks really awful.
My question is how are going to know the replacement doesn't exhibit the same issue? We'll have to take it home, set it up, synch some video and test it out just to see.
There is really nothing else we can do. I am going back tomorrow, I am hoping that the replacements are from a different batch by then, and maybe have the issue fixed.
I am glad that the problem is more widespread than originally thought, that means that Apple will hopefully resolve it faster.
Sammy, keeping this thread alive for you. Hope the genius bar was able to resolve things for you. I have an appointment in 2 hours and I'm not sure if I should go.
Good screen here. Purchased a few hours ago in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida Apple Store. I've looked at dark images and viewed two or three dark sections of different movies under flourescent lights and it looks as good as a portable screen could look. I'm real happy!
