3G nano won't accept video

I'm having what I think is an unusual, possibly unique, problem with a third-generation iPod nano (8GB) that I purchased yesterday. Everything about the iPod works perfectly except that it won't accept video content. When I select the video content I want to sync to the iPod, I get a message saying that that content is not going to be sync'd because video can't be played on that iPod. Video from my media library can't be dragged onto the iPod icon, either.

I have the latest version of iTunes installed, the latest version of OS X, the latest version of QuickTime, and the latest update of the software for the iPod itself. I might be able to understand this if the video content I'm trying to sync were of my own making (e.g., DVD ripping) and perhaps wasn't encoded properly or something. But this content is directly from the iTunes Music Store, downloaded last night -- a music video and an episode of a TV show. These videos play in iTunes without any problem, but I can't get them into the iPod. I checked to make sure that all purchases were downloaded, and they are. Also, the computer is "authorized."

As I said, this seems like a very odd problem because the iPod is functioning in every other way. And the message I'm getting isn't saying "Your video content is corrupted" or something specific like that -- it's displaying the type of message I'd expect to see if I attached, say, a third-generation iPod and tried to sync video to it. Obviously it would say, "Your iPod can't play video." The third-generation nano obviously can, because there's a video entry in its menus. And when the iPod is connected to the computer, the iPod screen in iTunes offers the option to "Manually sync your music and videos" -- according to the iTunes help file, it would say "Manually sync your music" if it didn't detect a video-capable iPod.

I've been on the phone with Apple tech support and the best they were able to do was assign me a case number and tell me to call them back in a few days.

I managed to sync videos with 3rd gen nano. I converted flashvideos with QT pro into ipod format. There was similar problem with me as well. I played with sync settings and ipod conversion and finally I managed to move them (original QT pro converted files). I newer find out what was the problem, but I tried covert videos in iTunes into ipod format (kind of second conversion). After that the move succeeded even with original files & plays ok in nano. Strange anyway. Latest ipod and iTunes SW.

I am also having the same problem with my new 3G Nano -- downloaded 2 TV Shows from iTunes - the appear on the computer, after updating quicktime they play just fine. There video setup appears to be what Nano wants. When you go to transfer/sync either manually or automatic I get an error message saying I cant transfer this video to nano. I do not get the option to optomize for ipod -- though I have the lastest software for computer, Nano, itunes etc. I've tried all the basic approaches suggested so far -- Made one call to Apple got a semi literate person who said I need to convert video -- I said let me understand I have an apple computer, latest version of iTunes, your new video Nano - download video from you website, the info on the video says it is in the correct format - he says Yes it appears so...UGH!!!

Is anyone making progress on this?

I had this exact problem on my iPod nano 3g and may have cracked it. I run an IBM thinkpad with Windows XP and currently have iTunes 7.4.3.1 nano is v1.03 software.

Here was the problem: Weird characters in the file name. Mine had square brackets NOT round brackets as shown: filename(2007).13 and a - hyphen or minus sign somewhere int he name. I'm not exactly sure what caused the problem, and I don't care because here's how to fix it:

Just go into "get info" for the movie or podcast and rename the file to movie13 or podcast1 (or whatever) and re-synch and problem is sorted. Then you get video and audio and no I didn't do ANY other conversion of the file to make it work. If I selected "convert for iPod" it would always say the file was already the right type.

Simple but true. Apple should sort this out!

I thought I had a codec or conversion problem and had tried a zillion type of file conversion programs from .avi to .mp4

Best wishes to all iPod nano owners.
