Does anyone now if it's possible to set up a ring profile so if certain contacts call then the phone will ring, but if anyone else calls the phone will send the caller to directly to voicemail?

I've had a few phones with this capability and it's quite nice when you're trying to sleep and don't want the phone ringing anytime someone calls, but you do want it to ring if a family member calls.

macbook pro, Mac OS X (10.3.7)

Nope.. the only way to do that is manually...

When your phone rings.. "Press the Sleep/Wake button" on top:

ONCE to mute
TWICE to forward to Voicemail

arrowhead711,

While you had a few phones that may have had this capability, the majority of phones out there don't feature this as this is not considered an absolute necessity in a mobile device. It's only subjective to whoever has experience with it and those who feel is necessary are users who really have any use for something like this, such as yourself. The next person may not feel that this is even needed, so it shouldn't be disappointing that the iPhone doesn't have this.

A solution to this could possibly find itself into a future software update, so it wouldn't hurt to make your suggestion known to Apple by using their Feedback Form here:

Until this option is added, you can make a silent ringtone and assign it for all the people you don't want to talk to, and a specific ringtone for family members. This way you will only hear the phone ring when a family member calls.

I'm not sure how this works on your Nokia phone. Did you have to turn this on and off manually for each individual when you did want the phone to ring when specific people called?

loopylucy some people their cell phone is their only phone and would like to keep it on in case of a family emergency... luckily my home phone has Annonymous Call Rejection, Custom Block List and DND so I can set it to DND (Do Not Disturb) and set it so nobody can call say between 10pm and 10AM then I can go to the whitelist and put in my family members numbers so they bypass the dnd settings... Cell Phone makers and providers need to get with the problem and start offering services such as Annonymous Call Rejection, Custom Block List sorry cell phones were calls cost per minute I shouldn't have to pay for a jerk to call me to try to sell me a new Vacuum or anyting... They also need to add Caller ID with NAME...

Well, on the bright side you get unlimited night and weekend minutes. So, if a telemarketer calls you after 9pm, it's free! 🙂

But, more seriously, are you not on the Do Not Call list? How is it that it seems so many telemarketers or unwanted calls are coming to your cell phone? Did you give your cell number to a company by mistake? (If you do, often that gives them permission to bypass the DNC List.)

Just request it as a feature to AT&T and Apple. They look at those requests and decide what is needed most.

I do agree, though, it would be nice to have caller ID with name. But, until then, we live on. Remember when we used to answer the phone without knowing who it was? How did we ever live!?

Sorry that we really can't be of much help.

Yes my Home, Cell, Work Cell, Work Landline I have added all of them to the National Do Not Call Registry but alot of them call anyways.. I have never had one call late at night I was just using it as an exactly.. Usually calls I get late at night are my ******** friends who think its alright to call at 1-2AM.... Or alot of the time I get calls on my cell phone asking me to transfer them to room # as they think I am a Super 8 Motel

Well it's just a bit disappointing in that it seems like it would be fairly easy to implement considering the iPhone can already give each user a custom ringtone, you'd think it could perform a simple, yet effective task.

Obviously the iPhone can do a lot more than that Nokia, it's just a bit disappointing to see it can perform all of the features and more.

Tim,

What you mentioned definitely sounds helpful.

Here's how the Nokia (and my Sony Ericson) works:

I can set up a number of different ring profiles.

One is silent, and when this is on, I hear nothing and calls go straight to voicemail. I can still see missed calls and read text messages so this is better than turning off the phone.

Another is Normal and the phone rings for everyone nice and loud. I can also mute this which puts it in a vibrate mode. Good thing to do before running into a meeting.

Now the last setting (and the one this thread is about) is what I've named Family mode. When I choose this profile, the phone will only accept calls from people I've put in the "accept calls from" list. This will make it so the phone only rings if my mom, dad, brother, sister, etc. is calling me. Everyone else will go straight to voicemail and I don't need to repopulate the list, or change the ring settings for individual callers.

As I've mentioned, it's quite useful when I'm expecting an important call, but I don't want to be bothered by anyone except that important caller.

When I'm done and I want my drunk friends to bother me again, I put the phone into normal mode. Now everyone can reach me.

This obviously isn't a crucial function, but it is nice to have and I don't see any technical reason why the iPhone shouldn't have it. Afterall, phone 5 years old have it.

And again, Surprisingly, I have heard of "turning the phone off" but then it won't ring for my family members, so I don't consider that to be a very effective solution.
