iPod classic 160GB skipping songs

I bought a new 160GB iPod only four days ago. I've noticed a couple of problems:

1) When playing a playlist, the iPod will sometimes skip a song. For example, when song 1 is finished, it will play song 3. It skips only some songs, but they are always the same ones. The songs played perfectly on my 80GB 5.5G. Unless I manually select them, they won't play along in the playlist. I've tried restoring and I updated to 1.0.1 but it didn't help.

2) I noticed the battery meter jumps all over the place when selecting different things on the iPod, especially videos. One second it was 3/4 full, the next it was 1/4, then back to half, thten it goes back to normal. Maybe it was doing that because it's a new battery, but I did calibrate it last night (fully discharge and fully charge) so maybe that fixed it. Haven't tried it yet. But has anyone else encountered this?

My 160Gb (I upgraded it to 1.0.1 on first connection to iTunes) skips parts of songs too. Sometimes it stops for 2 seconds in the middle of a track and then continues or jumps to the next track. It will play properly for 30 to 60 minutes and then do that.

I did notice that when it does this, the volume bar shows up. Perhaps it's a faulty click wheel that does something without me touching it? I'm going to change it today.

I am having all of the same song skipping problems as posted by others. In addition, it's not just within playlists - it's also within albums. Always the same songs, and doing a complete restore and updating to 1.0.1 made no difference. I have an 80GB Classic that is at 60 GB capacity.

Note that I can manually play the skipped songs by navigating directly to them - they playback without error, but then the next songs are still skipped, if they were skipped before.

This behaviour occurs very frequently (i.e., a large number of songs do this) and has rendered my iPod useless. Thank God I am on a long trip to India so that I can learn to appreciate a world without music while away from home 🙂

I've exchanged it for another one a couple of days ago. I've listened to four CDs now and watched 1 video (in two turns of about 25 minutes) and I haven't noticed anything odd.

When I connected the iPod, it updated to 1.0.2 and then I installed exactly the same library via iTunes (I hadn't changed the library since), so I think I can say it's not a problem in the library.

The guy in the shop muttered something about "probably a hard drive failure" and he might be right.

That might very well be possible. This morning I've been listening to 1h15m (Bach's sonatas for cello, great music) and not one single problem.

Given the fact that there don't seem to be too many people with this problem and that there seems to be very little in common except that is has something to do with playing, I'd say a hard disk problem is not unlikely.

Since not many people post later experiences, only initial, it's hard to gauge though.

I just restore to factory settings and then did a re-sync of my 160GB ipod ... I'm unable to play the same songs. To me this points to a firmware problem, not a disk drive problem. If it were a disk drive problem, what are the chances that the same songs would be restored to the exact same area of the disk that is failing? The chances this could happen would be very slim indeed.

I hope Apple can figure this out and give us a firmware patch.

if you notice from my previous posts, i have the same problem with skipping tracks. I have tried everything (resync, remove and re-add to library, etc. etc) to cure this problem even took my ipod back and got a brand new exchange and yet the problem still happpens. have just tried the firmware upgrade 1.0.2 and this has still NOT fixed the problem!

Then again, if it's software, why would the problem be gone in my case? And if you copied the files in exactly the same order back, it might still be the same hard disk problem.

So, if you're interested in shedding more light on the issue, you could do the following.
1) Reset the iPod completely, wipe everything.
2) Copy your songs, but in a very different order. If you first did automatic sync, then now turn it off. Copy albums in random order.
3) Now play the songs that had the problem.
