Logic Pro 8 & Pro Tools HD Hardware

It says in the manual that in order for me to use Logic Pro 8 with my HD Accel 3 hardware I have to use Pro Tools HD 7.4. That would be fine, but PT 7.4 doesn't EXIST.... Am I missing something here?

To muso4hire and all of you working with Pro Tools HD hardware and Logic 8:

How did you do it?

I installed L8 happily on my G5 PPC (2 x 2.7 GHz, 4.5 GB RAM, OsX 10.4.10) believing I always could return to L7 for my works in progress, but no luck. L8 wouldn't talk to TDM , L7 crashed on startup - I even bought PT 7.3, but it made no difference.

So I removed everything and reinstalled Logic 7.2.3 and decided to wait for PT 7.4. On the other hand I'd like to use some L8 features but dread another two days with my DAW crashed...

Thanx,
JJ

I followed the instructions above from Audacity and it worked great. The big difference between my system and yours is I'm still at PT 7.2.cs1, OSX 10.4.9, and DP 5.11. I was holding off on going to PT 7.3 because then I'd have to update DP 5.11 to 5.12 which is another accident waiting to happen. As far as the other post about multiple HD192's, I only have 1 so I don't know about being able to use more than 1 with Logic 8. When I did have 2 with DP at first it only saw 1 of them but with PT7 DP updated their software to see the 2nd one... not sure why Logic isn't playing nice with us TDM guys but clearly they are not as on top of this as the MOTU guys are. I expected more of Logic since they're owned by Apple....

It says in the L8 manual that Mac Pro user must wait until PT 7.4. I also use HD3 and was disapointed since I ordered L8 as a front end for PTHD. Note that Digital Performer 5.12 is ready for PT hardware.
Except if you run Structure it crashes DP.
TDM aside L8 is a pretty amazing DAW. The quality of the finish is so pleasing to the eyes. the color are not brutaly blue or bloody red. . I mixed a song with L8 it seams also that the sound quality of L8 as improve a lot. Anybody noticed ?. I have a pair of ADAM S2A speakers and a SUB Woofer. The sound of L8 is very close to PTHD but L7 sound was not IMO. Good news
Until PT 7.4 come out makeall good music.

Posted this at the Logic Pro Help forums, for those who are interested:

Decided to play Russian Roulette tonight and install LP8 on my G5/Dual 2GHz/2.5GB RAM/10.4.10 with PT|HD3 Accel and PT 7.2. Not only did the installer see the ProTools hardware and allow the installation of ESB TDM, but upon first opening the app, the default template automatically asked if I wanted to create DAE tracks.

Haven't tried to create a new template from scratch, but a dozen or so LP7 projects opened with zero issues.

A few extremely pleasant surprises:

1. LP8 TDM sounds better than under LP7. Definitely. Notably. I could even boost my output and master fader objects higher before clipping. Everything sounds brighter, more open, and with more definition. Either that or I'm completely insane.

2. Although I haven't found where one can name inputs in a new LP8 project, the I/O labels in LP7 projects showed up without a hitch.

3. TDM plugins show up in categories now instead of one long list! Yeah!

4. DTDM is WAY more stable. I opened every single plugin and not one crashed (the first time that's happened since buying HD four years ago). Although clipping the DTDM engine still results in nasty distortion across all DTDM tracks (until rebooting- dammit!), at least this time a dialog box pops up warning me about it.

5. Selecting a DAE audio object will indeed display its bus as the second channel strip. I kinda expected this feature to be stripped out for us TDM guys.

6. So far, all TDM insert plugins work great.

All is not perfect, however:

1. The screen seems really sluggish compared to LP7, especially when zoomed way in. Switching screensets is slower too. Hopefully there's more optimization to be done. Running a hardcore ATI video card for the 30" Cinema Display. Lower resolutions help a bit, but at the expense of precious real estate.

2. Clipping the DTDM engine still results in distortion across all DTDM tracks until reboot. Mentioned above.

Completely forgot to test AudioSuite, DTDM audio tracks, Access Virus TDM, the non-overlapping objects disconnecting stereo-linked regions bug, and graphical timestretch, but I'm optimistic, despite my historically disasterous luck. Tomorrow.

Thus far, I couldn't be more thrilled with this beast. Not only did Apple keep TDM support alive, but they actually improved it.

Logic allows you to build a Core Audio mixer (with Logic and AU plugins) within the DAE mixer and route all host channels into DAE through ESB (only 8 channels right now). So you can't run AU and TDM plugins on the same track, but you can bus a Core Audio track into a DAE channel (indeed, you have to) and process it again. You could also route busses to other tracks in earlier versions (finally added to Core Audio in LP8).

You can also quickly perform offline destructive processing of regions using AudioSuite, one of the last advantages of TDM hardware.

I´m running a Protools HD3 system, built into a MAGMA 4Slot PCI Expansion. It works with LogicPro7 as well as with LogicPro8. The HD Accelcards behave the same way in the Expansion as inside my G5, I just did a comparison test. Both constellations are not troublefree, but this depends more on the combination of OS-X/Protools DAE/Logic revisions. OS-X 10.4.10 is not certified by Digidesign, I tried it anyway and got in trouble. The combo OS-X 10.4.8 with Protools 7.1cs8 and LogicPro 7.2.3 runs fine together. This works with LogicPro8 too, except the SOLO function in the Audiomixer. There seems to be a new bug resulting in failure of the SOLO function for signals routed via BUS- and AUX objects.

To avoid this, You have to choose "CPU-saving (slow response)" for Track Mute/Solo in the General Audio Preferences. The new "Fast (Remote Channel Strips)" mode only works with CoreAudio and DTDM - not with DAE/TDM.
