Can't be done directly. Search through this forum a bit to find detailed suggestions, including but not limited to:
- get a MiniDV camcorder with analog inputs and "analog pass-through" feature
- record it onto DVD with a DVD recorder, then use software like MPEG Streamclip, Toast, DVDxDV, VisualHub or Handbrake to convert the DVD into an editable format on your Mac.
- find an older used Digital8 camcorder that can play back analog 8mm tapes.

+thank you for the quick response. however, is there any other way than buying new equipment?+

No, unless you consider borrowing equipment or getting somebody else to do it for you 🙂 Your camcorder has only analog outputs, and the only analog input that you Mac has is for audio.

There are also places that convert your tapes to DVDs. I have no audio how much they charge per tape.

Nope. It's just an adapter, not a converter, for video output, not input. This kind of adapter simply routes an analog video output signal available on one or more pins of your Mac's mini-dvi connector to the proper connections in a S-video connector. It doesn't work the other way round because your Mac has no video input capabilities.

Slight correction: Your iMac has limited video input capabilities through the built-in iSight camera. But that's it.

That would work. Or get a DVD recorder for use with your TV (i.e. like a VCR but it uses DVDs instead of VHS tapes). In either case, record in best quality mode, like 1 hour per DVD.

You will need one extra piece of software to convert the video from DVD format for use with iMovie. MPEG Streamclip + Apple MPEG-2 plug-in for Quicktime, Visualhub, Handbrake, and Roxio Toast are just some examples. This part gets discussed in this forum all the time, so you should be able to find more details.
