The "auxpropfunc" also make me think you have a failed update of 10.3 server, I've not seen that error since 10.3 server, and never on any clean 10.4 server install.

A tangent to your situation, but the cause of "auxpropfunc" errors is explained by Joel Rennich of afp548.com , on Apple's OS X Server mail-list, here:

Thank you both. I tried to rebuild the offending mailbox last night but the system crashed before it got a chance to finish. Further, there just isn't enough room on that drive or any other attached drives. Ugh. Frustrating. I am fresh installing a new box today and will attempt to move all the mail to that new box as you suggest.

As you can imagine, their users love this sort of thing! 🙂

I'll report back with the results. Thanks again. Mike

Not sure if this is the forum for this. I could send it to support on topicdesk if you like...

Doing a search for defaultbc on google yileds very little. Not sure where to go from here....

Sep 20, 2007 1:16 PM in response to sologroupmrc

Running it again goes through the folders a lot faster and seems to have gotten past the defaultbc folder issue. Just running the same command again...

It is now backing up the mail stores. But there are mail stores on there with gigabytes of information and it seems to be copying them VERY fast. Too fast. Checking the backup size of the folder it is only a fraction of what it should be. i.e. One user has a 1.8G mail store, and aftyer listing that it was backed up, the folder only has 97M in it.

Any ideas?

Sep 20, 2007 1:26 PM in response to sologroupmrc

Sounds to me like files got modified during the backup. This shouldn't happen if mail services are stopped, but then again your system seems to be messed up.

How did you check the size of the backup? If you used the finder you will not get reliable information.
Also if you backed up to the same directory you backed up before, without removing the backup first it will only backup incrementally (even if you selected full, since the previous backup never finished it could be in an "unreliable" state).

Also check that your hard drive is OK. It could well be that it has issues too.

Sep 20, 2007 1:36 PM in response to pterobyte

pterobyte, how does it perform the backup? By first listing all the directories to be backed up, THEN doing the copying? Here is what I have so far:

Backing up the Cyrus mail stores to /Volumes/TRANSFER/20070920-backup//mailbackup/cyrus partitionsDIRS
Backing up store: default from /var/spool/imap/ to /Volumes/TRANSFER/20070920-backup//mailbackup/cyrus partitionsDIRS/default
2.8M /var/spool/imap/stage.
18M /var/spool/imap/user/absent
89M /var/spool/imap/user/academy

ETC...

While listing the /var/spool/imap/users... the cyrus partitionsDIRS was not there. Now that it has finished listing all the user mail stores, the directory appeared, but none of the files. Al the mailbfr process seems to have stalled. Ugh.

Sep 21, 2007 9:41 AM in response to pterobyte

mailbfr works beautifully. Really. Thank you SO much. Once I understood that it was using rsync in the bg, and that it bascially scans all the info before actually copying, it wokred great. It wasn't a permissions issue or anything, just that the scanningwas taking so long, I got antsy. 🙂

A 30GB mailstore took about 5 hours to backup on our system.

We still have some issues with outgoing mail on the new temporary syste.m. Unfortunately, we're not out of the water yet. The postfix queue has a building number of items in it and is REALLY slow at delivering mail. queue has over 500 items in it and mail delays for hours. I cant figure out why.

Is there a postfix setting for the number of open connections? Or the number of processes spam/virus checking the mail? Or to monitor more closely what SMTP connections are coming in and out? The mail queue just keeps building without an indication of what is taking so long...

I can send more logs if needed, but the mail.log reports each connection , then sent, but just almost in a single file line. I thought many connections were opened at once.

Is the queue stuck or just very slow?
If it's stuck, post log entries, if it's just slow, this is most likely caused by the content filtering. The basic setup on OS X is far from optimal. Wouldn't really bother until you rebuild. When done check out my tutorials on "Frontline Spam Defense..." and "Updating ClamAV..." available here: Http://osx.topicdesk.com/tutorials/

ps U clamav will show the processes involved with content filtering

Just wanted to pop back in and say thank you to all that contributed, especially pterobyte. Thank you pterobyte for the excellent util mailbfr, and thanks for your patience during the process.

We successfully migrated the ailing server from a 10.4 box to a tempoorary mini, then back to the rebuilt 10.4 dual 1G G4 server with more RAM and a shiny, fast mirrored 500G drive.

They have >32G of mail with many users having >10K messages in the inbox. Wow.

Again, thanks for all the assistance.

(ps I tried to give the answered button a click for this topic, but I get a system error. As soon as it works, I'll try to give credit for answering this issue.)
