After I posted this morning(my morning here in London,) I tried my trick several more times. I had been mislead by the first two times when it had worked - the third time it didn't - nor the fourth but it did the fifth - all with different versions of the same project. One project in particular would not sync after repeated attempts.
So here's another, more long winded system that seems to work every time and might yet give Apple a clue as to where the problem is. I had perfect results 9 times so far.
Copying from Firewire 800 drive to Internal 1.4T raid 0
In the browser select ONLY the multiclip object.
Open media manager and select copy/ include render files/include master clips/ existing file names/duplicate selected items/include nonactive multiclip angles.
Select destination drive, name project, and go.
A new project opens with the browser containing the multiclip and the media files referenced by it.
NOW here is the IMPORTANT bit:
Drag the associated sequence object from the source disk to the browser of the new project.
Open the sequence in the timeline, open the multiclip in the viewer and presto- all in sync.
Strange brew No1:
I tried selecting the multiclip and the sequence for media manager and both are copied with the media files but upon opening them it's all out of sync. I deleted the sequence to the trash, dragged the original sequence object from the source disk to the browser of the new project and instantly all in sync!
Strange brew No2:
The first time you copy a multiclip like this FCP create a "Media" folder next to the new project file.
The problem with this system is that if you have several multiclips referencing the same media, the media get copied and put in a new folder, in the media folder, on the destination disk every time. BUT I discovered that if you close all projects, drag all the media files out of the first project folder into the general media folder and then the next and so on, not replacing files when asked, you finish up with one media folder with one of each of your media files and several named folders of redundant media. Incredibly these can be trashed and the next time you open a project the reconnection is automatic and everything is still in sync.
Oh boy its been a long day so far!
