multiclips loses sync in reconnection in FCP6 !!!

Hello,

I work for a company that depends on FCP. All of our assistants are running into the same problem where multiclips made on one drive in FCP6, lose sync when passed to the editor on a different drive.

The only workaround I have come up with without renaming the drives the exact same thing, is to stack the clips in the timeline making multi-clipping null and void. Freaking stone age. What's up with this apple????

I'm another who votes for some thing is screwy with FCP6 multicam. We have been editing a music festival which had 10 camera coverage in FCP5 with out probs, since we have gone to 6 it has caused much grief. Moving from one suite to another doesn't seem to work, sync points changed for no reason. We have a project thats multiclips have just gone crazy, the edited time line seems fine but when you play the multiclip the canvas goes crazy, some angles go black other don't reference what is actually one the timeline. We are going to install FCP5 on another partition and use multicam in that because FCP6 has too many problems.

I'm going to have to agree here that this simply is not acceptable. Has anyone come up with a solution or work around for this issue?

I'm working on a feature film cutting in Pro Res 422 and have just had all of my multiclips go out of sync in the same way described above after some of the audio was moved into a new folder within the same media drive. Can't go back to FCP 5 due to the resolution.

Come on Apple, don't leave us hanging.

Hi everyone,

We have the same issues with multiclips. Only SOME clips were a problem.
My solution is to cut a multiclip sequence, collapse the multiclips, re-edit from the original sources.
It is the only way to avoid the problems when media managing to a new project &/or sequence.
It seems that some clips remain linked to the original captured media (the FULL clip duration) & not to the media managed version. As you can imagine, if you have media managed to only the in/out points plus handles, the new browser clips cannot relink to the shortened media.

Apple need to fix this as it impacts on every business out there!

I have had the same issues and have solved the problem at least on my system.
Here goes!
The Problem:
Projects using the Multiclip editing feature in FCP cannot be moved to another drive without losing sync.
Halfway through an editing project the studio upgraded to an 8 core Mac Pro and to FCP6.1. All my files were on my Firewire 800 drive. From that drive in FCP 5.1.4 or 6.1 everything worked correctly.
However wishing to take advantage of the two 750gb SATA drives configured as Raid 0 in the new Mac Pro I spent long two days copying everything to the new drive every which way possible including using media manager all to no avail - Only the active angle appeared in the multiclip until you stopped the timeline. With the gun loaded and by my side I finally did the following:
Left the name of the destination drive different from the name of the source drive( I tried naming them the same at one point) Created a folder WITH the same name as the top folder on the source drive and created a folder of the same name as the folder on the source drive that contains the project and media files(this may be nonsense but I did it)
I selected the project tab in the browser and hit Cmd A to select all.
Opened Media manager and selected copy/ include render files/include master clips/ existing file names/duplicate selected items/include nonactive multiclip angles.
Set the media destination the the new second level folder and OK'd Saved the project under exactly the same name as the source project.

FCP opened the new project - everything was there - all the 5 sequences settings were correct, as were the attributes for the 10 hours of video clips.
Double-clicked the first sequence - double clicked the multiclip, hit sync open and hit play on the time line.
All the multiclips were - OUT of SYNC with only the active clip showing.
Did same with second sequence - same problem.
I reached for the gun but faced with my imminent demise then did something inexplicable and I guess intuitive - I put the timeline curser over the first clip - important because you had better remember what that angle was -
and double clicked on the source angle in the multiclip viewer. The clip on the time line stays the same - without moving the curser on the timeline I double-clicked each of the multiclip angles in the viewer in turn finishing up with the original angle to restore it to the timeline
Hit play and it ALL PLAYED IN SYNC. Not only that but all the other sequences in the project played in sync without me having to redo the above procedure.
SO apple - you now must be able to work out the problem - If others report this is a fix - don't leave it as yet another workround - fix it!

After I posted this morning(my morning here in London,) I tried my trick several more times. I had been mislead by the first two times when it had worked - the third time it didn't - nor the fourth but it did the fifth - all with different versions of the same project. One project in particular would not sync after repeated attempts.
So here's another, more long winded system that seems to work every time and might yet give Apple a clue as to where the problem is. I had perfect results 9 times so far.

Copying from Firewire 800 drive to Internal 1.4T raid 0
In the browser select ONLY the multiclip object.
Open media manager and select copy/ include render files/include master clips/ existing file names/duplicate selected items/include nonactive multiclip angles.
Select destination drive, name project, and go.
A new project opens with the browser containing the multiclip and the media files referenced by it.
NOW here is the IMPORTANT bit:
Drag the associated sequence object from the source disk to the browser of the new project.
Open the sequence in the timeline, open the multiclip in the viewer and presto- all in sync.
Strange brew No1:
I tried selecting the multiclip and the sequence for media manager and both are copied with the media files but upon opening them it's all out of sync. I deleted the sequence to the trash, dragged the original sequence object from the source disk to the browser of the new project and instantly all in sync!
Strange brew No2:
The first time you copy a multiclip like this FCP create a "Media" folder next to the new project file.
The problem with this system is that if you have several multiclips referencing the same media, the media get copied and put in a new folder, in the media folder, on the destination disk every time. BUT I discovered that if you close all projects, drag all the media files out of the first project folder into the general media folder and then the next and so on, not replacing files when asked, you finish up with one media folder with one of each of your media files and several named folders of redundant media. Incredibly these can be trashed and the next time you open a project the reconnection is automatic and everything is still in sync.
Oh boy its been a long day so far!

Thanks for your help Jon,

You are doing some interesting workarounds, however it only seems really viable if you need to create a new master project.

Right now I am working on a job with over 4 TB of media spread across 15 g-raids, 3 editors and 4 assistants.

90% of the media is multi-clipped. The only work around I found to quickly exchange multi-clipped browser items back and forth between all editors without losing sync is to have your multi-clips at the EXACT same length. This seems to work even though it is not a good solution and only applicable some of the time.

I have taken my method outlined in my second post of today a big step forward.
I needed to transfer from Firewire 800 drive to Internal 1.4T raid 0 a big project 14 hours of Video and 9 Sequences each with an associate multiclip.
I selected the entire project in the browser and copied it using Media Manager as outlined in my first post.
Without playing anything I deleted each sequence in turn and dragged the associated sequence object from the browser of the original project on the source disk to the browser of the new project.
Then I opened each sequence in the timeline, opened it's multiclip in the viewer and everything was in sync.
I think that media manager screws the relationship between the sequence and it's associated multiclip - the multiclip is OK - its the sequence that gets changed in some way.
Please post and let me know if this 3 days work does it for you!

Multiclips don't just lose sync. We are seeing that the clips don't show up. I work on NBC's Poker After Dark. We have 12 cameras in a multiclip and we have cut 120 shows this way. We just started the new season with the new FCP 6 and I am in real trouble.

When we did the orignial cut, everything worked. All 12 angles were there. We collapsed the multiclips as is our standard practice and now when we go back in to edit the multiclips are not showing all the angles.

Apple broke this and I hope they get a fix out quick. I am trying to deliver shows, and the only way is to go to the original footage, match timecode and insert the edit. Almost impossible with our project.

Come on Apple - you need to fix this. All the problems listed in this forum showed up with FCP 6. I have been using multiclips in my life daily for over a year. None of these problems existed before FCP 6.

Hi guys,
I guess by now you have realised that apple do not read these forums.
You have all clearly come across a problem and you are all in a common situation of having an upgrade forced upon you, rather than opting for choosing the reliable way of "backup all" or "don't change what isn't broke" before upgrade.
I have complete sympathy with you, the only way out of course is to
1. talk to your bosses first and tell them not to upgrade your kit bofore its proven
2. talk to apple direct via the feedback button (you won't get anyhere griping to apple here)
3. go on strike - we do that in the uk when we don't like bosses behavior (not that we get anywhere)

I would strongly agree that you appear to have an issue here, fortunately I am still happily working in
5.1.2
my sympathies to you all
regards
andy

Further to my previous 3 posts, I have now discovered that what I proposed in posts 2 and 3 works perfectly as long as you leave the original source drive online. Since I wanted to take advantage of the drive speed boost of the internal SATA drives it works for me. But turn the source drive off and all **** breaks out. Not only do the multiclips go instantly out of sync but media clips associated with the multiclip object go offline - which means that media manager seems to no longer reset any of the necessary drive paths. Further, no attempt to reconnect works beyond a project close - it is possible to reconnect all the media for a work session but after closing and reopening all the clips need to be reconnected again - and further, I could not reconnect all clips on the same path as the first clip identified - I had to reconnect them one at a time.
So under FCP 6.0.1 I can't move any project containing a multiclip permanently - Lets hope my present drive does not go down (touching wood!)
Sorry for my previous optimism's - but you've gotta try.

I skimmed thru a bunch of these posts. I also learned the hard way with FCP 6 and multicliping while cutting a show with a 12 camera setup. I didn't bother reading everyone's accounts of their exact workflows, etc. because in FCP 6, the multiclip problem is this simple: as soon as a multiclip (whether in your browser or timeline) goes offline, it loses sync. Just right click on one and take it offline (leaving the media on disk) and reconnect. POW, Batman, you just lost sync. How apple released FCP 6 with this problem is unimaginable. It cost us two weeks exporting almost a dozen shows in various stages of post as XML's to bring back into FCP 5.

I understand all of your worries and pressure. Lets try and fix or find the problem. I read a number of various versions of what has happened to people and would like to just narrow it down a bit. Some people have had projects from previous versions of FCP that they then opened in FCP 6 and experienced what was is being referred to as clips going out of sync. Even thought this could be the very situation I face lets put aside projects that updated from something to FCP 6 and just start with a new FCP 6 project.

Lets assume that moving the media in itself is not the problem but re-linking the media.

It has been said that If you take two clips (more if you want) and create a multi-clip then take one clip of line and then re-link the clip you loose sync.

What sync? video to video sync of the two clips that make up the multi-clip? Audio to video sync of one or both clips that make up the multi-clip?

I have tried this and had no problem maintaining sync. I did not quit or move the media but I did take a clip offline then re-link the clips and both clips in the multi-clip worked just fine.

Hi Tony,

Thanks for getting involved!

If you are working off of 1 drive I don't think you will see a problem. The multiclips go screwy when you are using multiple drives.

Using master clips on a drive. Make some multi-clips from subclips that have various lengths.

Then copy all your media (master clips) to another drive on another computer. And open up your project on that computer and check your multiclips.

Thanks,
Wyatt
