unknown error 2131 PLEASE HELP I've tried everything!!!!!

Hello! I am completely new to this forum but I am desperate!! Every time I try to burn a playlist to a disc from my itunes, the software checks the playlist, and initializes the disc, and then I get the message " The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred (2131)." I have emailed support twice and have gotten responses with numerous trouble shooting ideas...all to no avail. I have the newest itunes downloaded. My burn program is working correctly because I have successfully burned with it. I am wasting cd's each time I try to burn from itunes because it does initialize the disc. I am so extremely frustrated and am looking at other paid downloading sites, but am disappointed because I really wanted to use itunes, in addition to wasting 15 dollars on the songs that I cannot burn to a cd. Has anyone ever gotten this error message before? Does anyone know what it means and what I can do to fix it? PLEASE anyone that can help I would appreciate it sooooooooo very much!!!! I have no idea what to do anymore! Thank you so much!!! Lynne

Check put this thread which may give you some ideas to try:

It helps if you say what you have already tried. There is an Apple help on CD burning issues here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93360
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93286

It is also useful to post you CD Diagnostics, you can access this here;
Help>>Run Diagnostics...
You can copy and paste the result into a post.

Thank you for your response. I am relieved (although not happy) to have found another post with numerous other people with this issue with dell inspirion's. Apparently the certain driver in dell and itunes are not compatible and it seems that neither apple nor dell wants to be held accountable for the issue. I have tried the suggestions you have offered, and realize now that it is not a fixable issue unless I get a new driver. UGH!!! I am hoping that I will be able to burn music from other paid downloading sites, as it seems that itunes is not an option for me on this computer. Anyways, I just wanted to thank you for your response-this site seems to be an excellent resource!

I also have an Inspiron, and am getting this message. However, the i had burned several discs before it gave me this message. The first time it gave me the message, it spit out my cd, and my drive would not go back in. I talked to dell, and i got a new drive. The first time i tried to burn a cd with my new drive it gave me the same error. so in response, a new driver might not help.

If you have a Dell Laptop, then the fix is probably a firmware update. This link should definately help. Download the file and extract it to a folder. Double click the executable and then search for the bin file (button in the upper left hand corner). Open the bin file and if your cd or dvd burner matches the bin file, the update will run. Restart the computer. This has worked every time that we have applied it.

Copy and past the above link into your browser and download the file (see instructions above). The whole process takes about 5 minutes.

1. go to support.dell.com
2. put in your service tag (bottom of your laptop)
3. If you look under warranty information on the left side of the screen, you will find your original equipment list. It will show your CD / DVD Drive type.
4. Go to downloads and the CD / DVD Drives
5. Download the latest firmware for your drive type and install it.

Here is the link to the downloads for your Inspiron Desktop 531:

Since there are 4 different DVD / CD Models, it is important to download the correct firmware.

Let me know if this helps.

I have also been having a similar problem and tried to use the CD-RW type of CD and this allowed me to actually burn the disc instead of spitting it back out and giving me the error message I was getting. However, when I tried to play the disc in my car and on a portable radio it would not read it. Is there some way to convert it so that my car will play it? I tried to change it to record as an MP3 and it would not allow me. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it greatly! My computer is a Dell Inspiron 1501.

i've got the same problem with the same drive TS-L632H in a different Toshiba laptop.

the website to update the firmware is samsungodd.com/eng but there is currently no manual update for the drive and the liveupdate program itself reports that it doesn't support the drive (although the website says it does).

hopefully the firmware update will become available soon and it will solve the problem.

I also get this error message - I have a novatech Rasor T7100. I'm not sure what my driver is - I am lap top novice and previously was using a really old PC.

I have used a CD-RW with no problem, but of course this will not play in my car or on my stereo. I have bought tunes on I-tunes so really want to put these onto a cd. I have tried via my Media player, but this won't work, and from searching the net I found it is because I-tunes has something which restricts tunes downloaded or uploaded through I-tunes from being burned using another program.

Please please any advice greatly appreciated!
