iPod Classic PERMANENTLY RESETTING what do i do?

I just got a brand new silver 80 GB iPod classic. Yesterday i was listening to it and scrolling through songs. I started a song and it froze. I tried navigating through the menu but it wouldn't let me. Then I reset the iPod and it showed the apple logo, as it should, but then it stayed there. It wouldn't go away and I couldn't get to the menu. Then I went to my computer after it had ran out of batteries and plugged it in again. It went back to the apple logo! Then I left it there for a couple hours so it could charge and I took it out. The apple logo was still there. THEN I let it sit over night. The next day i took the iPod and plugged it into my Macbook. Now it wouldn't even show up on the sidebar of itunes. I am completely confused. Someone please help me.

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

It seems as though if those 10 steps work, you're good to go. Unfortunately if it doesn't let you reformat your iPod you're going to have to call Apple up and get them to send you a new one. The guy I was talking to said something was corrupted in my iPod, then he mentioned something about the connections inside, I don't really know... I'm not entirely sure he knew what was wrong, he just knew that he needed to send me a new one.

So basically I'm hoping the new one comes before Friday because I have a LOOONG train ride back to school, and I'd like to be able to use my iPod....

My iPod Classic has been weird at times from the beginning and finally 1 jan 2008 it began to restart over and over again. I tried to reset it. I tried to use the ten steps metioned earlier. I tried everything (I thought). To day I phoned the support and finally after explaining and doing the same all over in vain. The guy at the support asked if i had another computer. I have a Thinkpad running Vista so I tried to connect my iPod to it and guess what: I managed to reset it with version 1.0.2 and now it is running on my mac as a Windows formatted iPod.

We were both amazed.

Conclusion: try another computer:(

Whenever I try to restore it, it starts to go through the process and when it appears to be finished, the ipod resets itself from the disk mode screen, but it just keeps restarting itself again, never making it to the main screen. I am able to connect my Ipod to itunes and everything fine through disk mode, but I cannot appear to make any changes on it! Every time it resets I hear a loud clicking sound and it just continues that each time it resets, I am really desperate at this point!

My first 80gig Classic lasted from purchase date (Sept 2007) till New Year's eve 2007/2008..it died at the party! Same symptoms and attempts to restore as mentioned in this thread. Replacement came pretty quick and this one lasted 6 Weeks! Exact same problem. Now waiting on my returns box via UPS for replacement number 2. I never had an issue with any of the other iPod's I've had (Always upgraded to the latest version as soon as my music collection was bigger than my iPod!!)

Wow!! Some good and rather strange news! After reading back through this and other forums I came across advice to plug the iPod into a Windows machine. I did just that (had to restart the iPod in disk mode first)

Was prompted to update the iPod and I also reset to factory settings. Worked like a charm. It's now back and connected to my trusty old eMac and seems to be working a treat.

What on earth is going on? Never fixed an apple problem on a windows PC before! It's always the other way round!

Either way thanks to Meharryho and others

I have an 80gb ipod that I have had for alittle over 2 months now and it keeps resetting itself at the apple icon. What do I do, I have read all forums and have tried everything that I can think of. I shows the apple icon for about 15-30 seconds, then resets itself! Please help me out!?

There could be problems with the iPod's file structures so it might pay to check it for errors. Try putting the iPod in disk mode thus; hold Menu+Select for about 6 seconds until it resets, then hold Menu+Play as soon as the Apple logo appears, again for about 6 seconds to put the machine in disk mode. Connect to your computer, closing iTunes if it opens. Then browse *My Computer* and right-click on the drive for the iPod, click Properties, then click Tools. Under Error-checking, click *Check Now*. Under Check disk options, select *Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors*. Click Start. Mac users should run *Disk Utility / Repair Disk* for the equivalent process. This should find and correct any errors in the logical & physical structures of your iPod's hard drive. Once these have been fixed you can reset the iPod (hold Menu+Select ). If it successfully restarts great, if it goes into a loop again, stick it into disk mode as outlined above and try to connect to iTunes. Some users have reported that complex smart playlists can sometimes trigger reset loops, so if you'd recently introduced any new smart playlists before your problems started you might want to remove these. Otherwise it's probably time to restore the iPod and start over.

Same problem as everyone above, though I can't check the disk for errors as it comes up as an external hard disk of 0 bytes. iTunes says it's corrupted and tries to restore it and fails horribly. I've never had any problems with any of my other iPods (well, except for the headphone jack in the 2G) so this is really frustrating. Also I'm stuck in Italy for the next few weeks before heading off to London so it's not like I can just send it in very easily.
