mail.app and proxy settings

Hi there,

I've just set up my network preferences to get on my university network (had to add proxy settings and stuff) but now the mail app cant connect to the my mail server to retrieve/send mail. Any ideas how to get it up and running again?? Do I have to change proxy settings in mail.app too or something? Cant seem to find any place to do anything like that, BTW, I can get online no probs with safari, just mail seems to be the problem,

thanks in advance,

Hi ejmmbrady.

Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose the network interface used to connect to Internet from the Show popup menu and try disabling the SOCKS Proxy in the Proxies section if it’s enabled.

While you’re at it, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. Leave checked (enabled) only the port configuration needed to connect to Internet and Built-in Ethernet (in that order if not the same), uncheck (disable) the rest of network port configurations and see whether that helps — if it doesn’t, turn ON again the ones you want enabled.

Hi,

My problem sounds really similar. I connect to an exchange server at one university but when I am physically located in another university that I also work at I cannot access the server using the Mail program.

I don't really understand the details but I was able to use a program called PROXIFIER to force mail to use a SOCKS proxy (or something like that).

Result... Mail now works from behind the university firewall.

Good luck!

p.s. You'll need a SOCKS address, port, username and password (these last two were my usual login details)
