Internal Speakers not working

Hi! My speakers were working fine, then i plugged in headphones and the sound worked perfectly. I take out the headphones and there is a red glow where the jack is and all sound options for output are greyed out. Please help! I can't figure out how to get back my speaker sound

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Try inserting the headphones again. Give it a little wiggle back and forth (don't go nuts and really wiggle it enough to break it off). Might have to do it a couple of times. The MacBook uses an IR light to know when something is plugged into the jack and for whatever reason it still believes there's something plugged in. Might even try a different set of headphones if you have some.

I do not have leopard, yet it is an issue on mine. Also, chances are when you first boot up your computer, you'll be able to hear the internal speakers chime. The reason is that the driver for the optical sensor has not yet been loaded at that point. The sensor is stuck still, and hence as soon as the driver that monitors the sensor is loaded, it will register it as though an optical cord is plugged in. If we could isolate this driver and disable it, this would fix the problem. Anyone with ideas on how to do that?

yeah - i get that feeling. GOOD NEWS THOUGH - i just sat here with a bit of leather thong from a necklace very gently inserting it into the port and angling it so the end touched the bottom (6 o'clock) of the port & the audio from my speakers sprang back to life. just put the headphones back in too & pulled them out again & it's still working.

thanks for the tip people. worrying that that can happen, but at least there's a fix for now!

I found something that worked! The same issue happened on one of my customers' MacBook. The Sound control panel only allowed the option to choose Digital Audio, the internal speakers did not show up as an option, and the prohibit sign (circle with a line through it) showed up when pressing the sound up, sound down keys.

As suggested by others, I tried plugging and unplugging a set of external headphones into the headphone jack, but that did not work. I decided not to try the toothpick suggestion yet.

However, I decided to turn my attention to the audio-in jack, so I plugged the same headphones into the that jack (next to the headphone jack), removed them, and voila - all was back to normal.

Hope this helps some of you out there. --Andrew
