Sender address rejected

While my (older) laptop is playing up, I've just set up internet access on my G5, hopefully temporarily. I have input all the relevant information in setting up Mail, and while I can receive mail, when I send it I am told that 'The sender address ... was rejected by the server'. According to Mail Connection Doctor my smtp connection to my ISP is fine, so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Is this something wrong here, in my set-up, or should I sit 'on-hold' for another 45 mins waiting for someone at my ISP to pick up?

Thanks for your help.

I've tried this, which seems to suggest it's an outgoing problem (I think). As soon as I press 'Send' a window unscrolls saying:

Error

This message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it can be delivered.

Ther sender address (...) was rejected by the server

However, the sender address is correct, and I am receiving mails fine off other people; I just can't reply to them (or am having to do so via webmail).

Go to System Preferences>Accounts
Click on the lock and enter your password.
Click on the + sign above the lock.
Create a new user account.
Click on the apple menu and choose Log Out
Log into the newly created account.
Open Mail and enter your mail account settings.
Send a test email.
This will tell you if the issue is restricted to your user account or system wide.
If Mail works you know the issue lays within your user account.
If you still receive the message then the issue is either with the mail program, the existing system or a problem with the service provider.
If another computer from this same connection using the same mail settings can send mail then the issue is isolated to your computer.
If you isolate the issue as a system wide issue and have no other computer to test with let me know.
Sleep beckons.

Right...

I just set up a trial .mac account to test from this computer and that seems to send emails just fine. I tried using smtp.mac.com as the outgoing mail server on my other account but I still get the same error message.

I've also just spent 45 mins on the phone to my ISP (BT) and have exhausted all their diagnostic tests, but to no avail. It's not a problem with passwords, it seems, as I can receive mails, and send them via web mail, and, as I've said, I can send mails from my .mac account, but I just don't know why it won't let me send from my BT account. Why would it not recognise my sender address, which it gives as my correct email address?

Grrr...

In addition, I've just added my own domain name email address into the 'Email Address' window in this account, and this also doesn't work, suggesting I try the other outgoing mail servers (none of which work) before saying that it doesn't recognise the sender address.

I'm pretty sure that the settings are the same as on my previous computer, and it does seem strange that I can send via my .mac account, but not my other one (even when I attempt to use smtp.mac.com).

Any help please?

Yes, the previous laptop is an iBook but it has problems of its own, which is why I started using this G5 for email until the laptop was sorted (or replaced, more hopefully).

As for my .mac settings, the outgoing mail server is smtp.mac.com and the port is 25, the same as that used on my other (BT) account. When I was on the phone to BT earlier, they asked me to try another port number (587?) but that didn't work either.

I get the feeling that I've set up the account incorrectly somehow, although the settings seem to be the same as on the iBook.

If your mail was working or works on your iBook then you have a working plist.
When in the Finder >Go>Home>Library>Preferences
Hold down on the option key and drag the com.apple.mail.plist to your desktop, this creates a copy.
Mail the plist copy to yourself or otherwise move it to your new computer.
Navigate to Finder >Go>Home>Library>Preferences
Remove the existing com.apple.mail.plist from the folder and replace it with the one from your iBook. If Mail now works you will need to set up your .Mac account again. The port 587 is correct for .Mac. The fact that .Mac is working on port 25 means that BT are not blocking port 25 and this is not a port issue.
If the plist is not a possibility please test in a new user account as suggested earlier. If the issue is system wide you need to replace the Mail program and run the 10.4.10 Combo update or do an Archive and Install preserving User and Network settings. The Archive and Install is a better option if you do not have many 3rd party programs to reinstall. You would then need to run Software Update after a reinstall.

Try open Terminal in Utilities and cut and paste this command:
cat /var/log/mail.log
it will show you what is happening with your Mail. it might say 'unknown domain' or a message about authorization, etc. I had a problem with sbcglobal.net requiring me to use their smtp server. They would block port 25 unless I told them not to. You might have to change to port 587 for the SMTP outgoing in Mail Preferences. "Contact your mail hosting provider for information about using Port 587 for sending authenticated outgoing email. Since December 1998, Port 587 has been the Internet standard (RFC2476) port for authenticated email submission for mail clients and is supported by most major mail hosting providers. " good luck!

Thank you both for your very detailed responses. Thankfully, someone from my ISP phoned back with some other suggestions and it transpired that there was a conflict of some sort in which my password was being rejected upon trying to send emails (although it had been set up so as not to require a password) although all was well when receiving them.

So, all is now well, but thanks for trying to help — it's much appreciated.
