iPod Classic 160GB :: Battery Drained While Not Used?!?!

Okay, please someone tell me that this is a firmware bug & not a hardware issue, even though I have AppleCare & if it is a hardware issue, I can get my iPod exchanged for a new one:

I went to sleep last night & my new iPod Classic (v1.0.1) 160GB had a full battery. I didn't use it, it was turned off in it's case with the HOLD lock activated.

This morning, I synced it once or twice with my iTunes & after disconnecting the cable, noticed that the battery read approx. 75% full.
I ignored it thinking it was a glitch or a mis-read.

Now, 3 hours later, I took it out of it's case, it was turned off as I left it with the HOLD lock activated, & when I attempt to turn it on, the screen displays a big Yellow Exclamation Mark saying: *Please connect to a Power Source* as in the battery is dead.

Does anyone have any advice or insight into this? Is this a bug or defect? Is this a known issue that others are or have experienced? What did I do wrong?

Please help. I'm concerned.

Thanks 🙂

iPod Classic 160GB (Black), Windows XP Pro, Currently using 6th Generation iPod. Have used 3rd, 4th & 5th generation in past

Hi guys,

I've been reading your posts and I can asure you that this problem has been fixed. You only need to update your itunes + ipod software. And UPDATE your IPOD! this is very important, it wont do it automatic unless you do it (so it only will update your itunes). After this, you should be able to use coverflow with no battery drainage.

My first iPod classic 160GB drained on me twice. I had firmware 1.0.3. I took it back for another unrelated issue. The iPod that I have now is OK. I have firmware 1.0.3 and removed Cover Flow from the menu. I always make sure that I go back to the main menu, wait a few moments then click and hold my play button. I finally enable the hold button. Then, to be extra sure, I put it to my ear to ensure the hard drive really did turn off. All is well now.
