Am I the only one getting the error (0) message when trying to update EFI 1.1, it shoots up saying that my firmware cannot be updated go to apple.com/support but I didn't find anything there.
Okay, my MacBook with the EFI 1.1 firmware update problem is back from the Apple Store in store repair. They replaced the logic board. The firmware changed from B00 to B02, indicating a later production date or previous update on the board. Even though the initial problem was with the EFI 1.1 update, the store did not try to reapply the update after installing the new logic board. I pointed this out and they requested that I leave it. I chose to take it home with me. I tried the update and it had the exact same failure mode as before. The logic board replacement did nothing.
So. I used my copy of SuperDuper and made a backup copy of the hard drive. I repartitioned the internal HD with the GUID partition scheme (From Apple Scheme). I then used SuperDuper to reload the contents of the internal HD. I then ran the EFI 1.1 updater and it when off without a hitch. My bootloader is now: MB21.00A5.B07.
I wish I had been more patient. At least I have a new logic board. It does have a short warranty.
I now have a solution for MacBooks (and maybe MacBooks Pro) which refuse to update but don't show any error message.
It is the firmware of the Samsung HD. After I got Samsung HD's firmware updated I could update the EFI version. I now have EFI v...07 as expected. So I think you need somebody with windows who knows how to update a HD firmware or you just have to swap hardrives to a different manufacturer/version.
i have another problem with this update.
I can start it properly and the systeem reboots, i press the powerbutton down and the signal comes up.
But then the screen remains white, nothing happened, no status bar or anything...
I know 3 people with the same problem.
We all have MacBooks C2D with this versions:
Boot-ROM-Version: MB21.00A5.B00
SMC Version: 1.13f3
We have no upgraded HD or anything, just standard.
Another interesting thing to know could be:
When trying to install bootcamp the same error occurs, the screen remains white after the reboot.
AND: When we try to reboot the System normally, white screen. We have to shut down the system and start it with the power button...only then it will work.
GUID partition format was indeed the problem, I formated an external to GUID, cloned it, booted from it, partitioned the installed drive to GUID and cloned the clone back and was able to fix the problem.
Glad i checked here before running the update, which auto downloaded itself.
As I've installed a new HDD and used SuperDuper to clone the old one, I'm thinking I'd be better off not installing this update. What are the implications of not loading it?
If your new HD has the GUID partition table, you should be OK.
If your new HD does not have the GUID partition table, you should make it GUID sooner rather than later.
Before running the update, you may need to clean out these cache files:
/Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-*
iceman12c is correct. If you are having firmware install errors, check to make sure your HD is formated for GUID. His instructions are great and it will fix your firmware error (0). I confirmed his theory by formating one drive w/APM (apple partition map) and another w/GUID did the restores on both then attempted to run the firmware updates. It failed w/the APM hard drive and passed w/the GUID hard drive. Both drives were identical non apple hard drives. FYI - This only applies to Intel based computers.
