My unmodded iPhone was bricked by 1.1.1

I heard somewhere that the 1.1.1 update is bricking legitimately AT&T activated pre-pay iPhones, which is what I have. I'm just angry and I want to know what is really going on with the 1.1.1 update... Does anybody know?

I had no problem with my update. But my phone didn't have anything on it but apple software.

Before the last upgrade I had used one of those third party ringtone programs and had gotten one of those triangular error messages. I reset my phone and then restored it back to the factory settings. Then I applied the update. It's worked fine ever since and I've never modified with anything but Apple software ever since.

Robert,

Your comment is unfortunate. I am an Apple loyal since 1984 (I had an original Macintosh with an external floppy and no hard drive). When I connected my 2 week old, completely unmodded iPhone to sync today and was prompted to install the update, I did so. The update never installed and I have wasted three hours trying to get my phone working again. That in itself is unacceptable; that it is happening with alarming frequency to other legitimate users is inexcusable.

Like I said most installs obviously went well. No upgrades go without hitches on all devices. Perhaps a call to Apple would help. Perhaps you did. I too have been a loyal Apple user for many years. I upgraded 3 phones without a problem. It would appear that every phone and computer combination may have some different issues. All I was suggesting is that Apple might help. Continueing to do a reinstall over and over won't help. I had a problem with an IPod and firmware update that did not work. After letting it run down to no battery life at all it was able to be restored. Again over 1,000,000 phones sold and upgraded. These forums are for those with issues and are relatively few by comparison. My frustration with reading these phone forums is that most people seem to start their discussions with attacks rather than sitting back and working out the problem. I too have had problems with other upgrades and found that Apple tech support is generally very helpul. I am sorry it took you 3 hours to get your phone running again, but think of all the other upgrades you had done in the past that went without problems.

You bring up a good point - especially since many of us only have one phone (our cell phone). Perhaps people need to be mindful of the risks associated with software updates to phones. I had a Smartphone with my previous carrier that upgraded to Windows Mobile 6 with no problems. Hopefully Apple can ensure that updates to its iPhones go as smoothely (keep in mind that I am NOT a fan of Microsoft, and am a big fan of Apple).

In any case, I wait patiently to perform any updates on my iPhone until the bugs and kinks have been worked out. Why? Because I can't risk being without a working telephone 🙂.

I don't mean to squelch anyones conspiracy theory but the iPhone updates are not coded to intentionally block anyone from unlocking their iPhones nor punish those who have already done so. They are designed to correct issues that have been identified by customer feed back and validated by applecare phone technicians and software engineers. They are also designed to release new features.

If you have an issue with you phone try the following:

1. go to www.apple.com/support and try some key word searches (hint, often typing the numeric component i.e., 1604 or the entire error message verbatim) often returns a knowledge base article result that may help you resolve the issue.

2. go to discussions.apple.com, select your product and sub topic if needed and try some key word searches. The research potential of 1 million + iPhone owners is bound to turn up some valid solutions or at least good suggestions.

3. Call 1-800-MY-IPHONE, you do after all have free telephone support with apple care as long as you are contracted with AT&T. In the event you are someone who has unlocked their iPhone and uses it with another carrier, you have the option of purchasing an applecare protection plan for phone support beyond the complimentary 90 days.

I have an unmodded iPhone, been using ATT for two weeks, then last Friday attempted to update to 1.1.1 ... phone returned incorrect SIM card error message... went to ATT store and got a new sim card, still didn't work. Called Apple support today and they accused me of hacking the phone and wanted me to send the phone in for diagnosis.

I've been without my phone for 5 days, it was even worse that it died right before I was going out of country for a conference, all of my contact info was in there. It was extreme frustration to say the least.

I've been a loyal Apple customer since forever. The loyalty is deteriorating really fast. This is prompting me to actually hack the phone to get it working again. I am completely speechless.

It's not mean, but it is entirely unreasonable, and if any person has this said to them when they have not done any such thing, they should challenge the accusation and refuse to accept Apple denying them continued warranty support. Apple cannot help but know that there are some legitimate cases of iPhones being rendered inoperable without having been hacked, so they must have some means to verify whether that has been the case or not. Escalating the case up to and beyond store managers if in an Apple store or the various levels of support if calling by phone should get an unfairly accused owner somewhere at least.
