Why can I receive but not send messages through Mail?

I recently installed a wireless router (linksys). I can send mail at the local coffee shop, yet here at home I can't. I know it's something very simple, but I'm giving up...and asking for help in fear of tweaking the settings beyond my knowledge. I get a popup that tells me I can't use the listed server for outgoing mail. I have a couple choices...1) lynksys 2)stmp.mac.com:tugboater.
I wish I could get it set up...Its annoying to have to use mt yahoo address.
Heelllppp!

Andy,

Make sure to restore the incoming server port to be 143. On the Outgoing Server, click on the arrows beside the Outgoing server box, choose Edit Server List, and remove all version of smtp. Then Add the smtp.mac.com again, as the Outgoing server, and using Port 587, with Password and Username.

If this doesn't work, we can do several other things. Where have selected to store Sent messages -- on the server, or on your mac?

Ernie, thanks for the reply. My incoming port is 143 unless I click on the SSL check box, then it changes to 993.

My outgoing port is set to 587. I followed your instructions to remove my .mac account and reset it, but no dice.

I store my sent messages on the server.

Also, a side note. I am unable to send messages online from my .Mac version of my mail account but can receive emails.

Thanks,

Andy

Andy,

Please review for me whether this email account is that for an address of a full subscription .mac account, and whether you have more than one .mac address? Your comment of not being able to send "online" (which I take to mean while accessing .Mac with a browser such as Safari) is a key observation, and somewhat raises the question of something wrong outside of the setup in the Mail application.

I have a full .Mac account for which I have 1 email account (with a couple of alias' that I use to organize my account).

I cannot send from my computer-based Mail program as well as my Safari online .Mac mail account, ut I receive incoming mail and it is visible in both version of Mail.

I checked with my cable hi-speed internet provider to see if they had any ideas, but they seemed to think that as long as I could get on-line, it was nothing to do with them.

Thanks for your help!

I have a similar problem to Andy's.
I've been using my current e-address seamlessly for several years with no problems.
I run 10.4.10, and Mail 2.1.
A few days ago with no warning I could no longer send e-mail. I still receive fine.
I get the message "This message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it can be delivered. The server "smtp.charter.net" refused to allow a connection on port 25."
I can send web-based mail thru charter's on-line service. Charter says I'm on my own.
I "Pinged" sucessfully. I changed to "587" with no results. No firewalls.
Two other Macs (OSX) in the same house with the same settings are having no problems.
I'm stumped.
Any clues?
Thanks for any help.

Larry,

I don't think the problem is similar, at least based upon what you have reported thus far.

With Charter, the correct setup on the Outgoing Server has been to use Port 25, and None as the method of authentication, and without any entry for Username and Password. This is because the authentication to use their SMTP is done via the IP address of the modem, and a second, redundant authentication will fail.

Have you checked to see if this still works? If not, has Charter sent out any new advisories about email setup?

Ernie,
Thanks for your reply . . .
No, no advisories, but again, no settings have been changed on this machine, and two other Macs on the same same home network (wireless routher) still function properly.
I think I must have a piece of busted code because one day I could send, and the next day I couldn't.
I'll keep trying.
