iPod touch not responding to touch!

I've just bought an iPod touch today. Right out the box, after syncing it with iTunes, I was only too eager to start playing with it... Only to my dismay, part of the "touch sensitive screen" is not responding to touches. The area of my iPod touch affected is the center portion of the screen... due to this, I can't adjust brightness and many other options, which I can't use or navigate properly.

I've read around the apple discussions, and I noticed that some other users have the same problem. For them, different parts of their screen is not responding to touches. This is a really stupid problem to have. But it is a problem, nevertheless. I bought a brand new iPod touch, and it's already a defect. Obviously, I'm very unhappy with this.

This might be something affecting a small majority of the iPod touches out there. But it also might be a problem waiting to affect other owners.

Does anyone know whether this is a software or hardware issue? Should i just bring the iPod touch to the authorized dealer and demand an exchange (which might have the same problems)?

Any information from you guys would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Same problem here! I have problems with sliding the power off button across the screen. There is actually an area on the touch screen extending from top to bottom just about 3/4th of the way from the left of the screen that is not working. The keypad keys that that fall into this area and do not work are U, H, J, B, N which is a pretty good chunk of the screen. When I slide to power down or to unlock I have to move quickly across to jump over this bad area. For this reason it was difficult to notice at first.

Can this be fixed with a software or firmware fix or will I have to send it in?

in reply to braddevlin - one defect on your first product shouldn't mean getting a refund and buying a completely different product, apple have excellent customer support and are more than happy to give a replacement if needed, out of many hundreds of thousands (probably millions) of people who now own an ipod touch only a small minority will have found any problem in theirs, its just unfortunate that you recieved a faulty first product from apple!

I couldn't find any sales figures but I am sure that thousand of touches have been sold. Out of all of those there really aren't that many problems. Some people just got unlucky and bought a bad touch. I have had mine 2 weeks and had no hardware problems with it. They have warrenties on them so just take it back and get a new one.
