LaserWriter II NTX

Hi. I have a PowerMac 7200/90 with a LaserWriter II NTX, that I use occasionally, but it has worked well. Until water got into the printer. I dried it out. It powers up, but all of the lights light up and stay on.

It is probably too expensive to repair--right?

I'm looking for an inexpensive replacement online. Besides the LaserWriter II NTX, are there other laser printers that would be compatible with this PowerMac operating with OS 8?

Thanks, shellbern

shellbern,

Any number of printers will work with that computer.

Could you indicate what country you are in and the largest city near you? Your options depend upon your location. If you are near a university that sells surplus equipment or a large city with recycling centers, you can find much more capable printers for $25-$50. One university was selling laserwriter 360 Select printers for $35 and 16/600 ethernet capable printers for $25. Toner for the 360 is $70 and toner for the better 16/600 is $30. Why the better printer was cheaper and supplies lest costly, I do not know. Kowing your general geographic location will help us search for suitable options.

shellbern,

Ironically, googling "Boston university surplus computers" to find recycling resources in your area turned up an interesting article for Seattle. That is the best place in the northwest for surplus computer equipment.

This university has a recycling program but I did not see a store listed.

If you google for Boston yellow pages and computer recycling, you will find commercial recyclers like this one but unfortunately, they do not sell to the public. They probably do not have the staff to deal with teaching and troubleshooting. Check your yellow pages to see if there is a retailer in town.

This site has a list of Apple LaserWriter printers:

My favorites are based on the

LaserWriter Pro 630 and LaserWriter 16/600 PS because they have built-in ethernet. The 4/600 does not but it uses the same chasis and toner. All the laserwriters will work with older computers. The newer printers with ethernet will work with OS X.

Post back if you find a printer that you want to know more about. I used the 360 for as long as possible but toner costs more than the 630 style and the 360 does not have ethernet.

Hope this helps.

Jim
