Importing from Maxell DVD-R question

My computer is an Intel iMac running OS X vers. 10.4.10 and iMovie HD6 vers. 6.0.3.

I borrowed my son's Sony camcorder and recorded onto Maxell DVD-R discs. The discs were finalized and when I put them in my computer I can view the movie in iMovie but cannot import the movie into iDVD HD. I've gone to "Open" and also tried "Import". The movie DVD is seen, when I click open or import nothing shows up in the iDVD file I just created.

On the second DVD-R recorded about 1 hour after the first, I have no sound. I'm not aware of changing anything on the camera.

What am I missing?

DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing... or, as honorable forum member QuicktimeKirk stated: I use the analogy of the old Polaroid "instant" cameras. Push the button, wait for the print to develop and show it off. ..

for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:

DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
VisualHub (23.32$)
Drop2DV (free)
Cinematize >60$
Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
Toast 6/7/8 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
none of these apps override copyprotection mechanisms as on commercial dvds...

The dvd's I'm referring to are one's I took while on vacation. There's no copyrighted or commercial material involved. Do I still try to rip the contents using your suggestions. I can't check into them until later this afternoon. I do have Toast 6. What I'd ultimately like to do is import 5 dvd's into iMovie and make one final dvd.

I need to make a correction here - I can view the movie in DVD Player but cannot import the movie into iMovie. Also, the sound in not a problem.

Karsten, before I posted this question, I not only searched the Apple site, but the internet and couldn't find an answer.
