Cracked screen

I cracked the glass on my iphone screen. It seems to work fine for now anyway. What is easier: replace the iphone or replace the screen? Is it easy to roll all my info and phone number to a new account? Is there an easy way to get the screen repaired?

I just thought I relay my experience with the Genius Bar and my cracked screen. I apologize if this has been mentioned, but I really think the deciding factor as to whether they'll replace it is what kind of crack it is. The genius took one look at mine and said, "Yeah, we can give you a replacement." Didn't even ask if I ever dropped it or anything; it was truly 'no questions asked'. He went on to say that for a thin, hair-line crack such as I had it's very possible it was a defect and was simply a stress fracture, but if the glass is shattered or has a puncture or shows a 'spider web' pattern radiating from a single point, then it was almost certainly caused by some kind of trauma. Of course, that determination is subjective so I recommend anyone with a cracked screen to bring it in regardless. You may be pleasantly surprised, as I was.

I initially applied a clear plastic tape over my cracked screen using a tape that was about two inches wide. It worked fine but I was concerned about the surface eventually becoming less transparent. When I finally went into the Apple store, I was fortunate enough to have a very assertive person adjacent to me with the same problem. We both received replacements.

I would recommend that anyone with an iPhone invest in a personal articles policy from their insurance company. I got one from State Farm in addition to my renters insurance. It cost me only $30 a year and covers any accidental damage or theft. Better than worrying about whether apple will replace it or not IMO.

I'd be curious to know what your deductible is. I do have Personal Property Replacement coverage on my homeowners policy but the deductible is $500. Obviously I wouldn't use it to replace a cracked screen that's going to cost ~$250 to repair. I suppose if I were willing to pay a higher premium I could have a lower deductible - perhaps even no deductible - but the higher cost would probably not outweigh the benefit.

Your mileage may vary, of course. 🙂

The iPhone is another Great product from Apple. It does state in the manual that the screen is glass and could crack. And yes it will!! Mine did and I was very lucky to have it replaced by Apple to which I am very thankful. I have compiled a webpage with some information along with a good case to get, which I am hoping will really protect this really cool device. www.billiardinstruction.com/iPhone.htm We all have to be very careful and I mean very careful (consciously treat it like you would a computer, not the normal mobile phone care we all have been accustomed to) Hold onto it like you would a baby, and enjoy it.
