Booting from an external DVD drive to install Tiger

I have an older Mac G4 tower (400 mhz) that I want to install Tiger on. It is currently running 10.3.9. I bought a Lacie external DVD drive/ writer to install the Tiger DVD with. When I open the setup program and click the blue "restart" button, the computer restarts, but restarts to the old OS. I tried going into System Preferences and changing the startup disk to the external drive, but to no avail. Does anyone know how I can get this computer to boot to the external drive so I can install the OS?

Amy:

Welcome to Apple Discussions.

First, be sure you have a good, up-to-date backup of your computer or User's Folder.

Connect your external Firewire DVD drive to the computer via firewire.
Power up DVD drive and insert install disk.
Hit the Power button on the computer and hold down the "C" key immediately after the chime.
When booted, select language.
Go to Utilities menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
Click Repair Disk Permissions.
After Permissions are repaired Click Repair Disk.
Quit Disk Utility.
Open Installer and begin installation.
Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
Check box to install X11 (Tiger) BSD Subsystems (Panther & earlier).
Proceed with installation.
After installation computer will restart for setup.
After setup, reboot computer.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
Click Repair Disk Permissions.
Connect to Internet.
Download and install 10.4.10 Combo update or Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update (PPC) if you are hesitant about 10.4.10.
Computer will restart after updates.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
Click Repair Disk Permissions.

Good luck.

Try this, assuming that your Tiger install disk is a retail copy and not one for another, specific Mac. Boot with the Panther disk, pop in the DVD, and, after it mounts on the Desktop, select System Preferences->Startup Disk->select the install DVD, and click the Restart button. I have a LaCie DVD± RW external burner and it works flawlessly.

I also do have a LaCie d2 DVD/DL external burner and I can't boot from Tiger, when I start my iMac and keep hold down the "option key", I get the boot menu, when I pick the Tiger's DVD Install Disc 1, it just reloads the boot menu, when I do it once again, I only see the HD and Tiger's diagnostic mode, when I click on the Tiger's diagnostic disc, a grey screen appears and remains ... 😟

Then, I suspect that you're clicking the left-hand circular arrow, which just researches for bootable volumes. With the install DVD in the burner, restart holding down the OPTION button until icons start popping up. When the clock cursor changes to an arrow, select the install disk, and click the right-hand arrow. Alternatively, while booted into the computer, pop in the install disk, select System Preferences->Startup Disk->select install disk, and click Restart.

OK. Then try reseting the open firmware with that RAM chip out.

Restart, holding down the CMD OPT+OF keys until text starts scrolling down the screen, type these in, one at a time, following each with hitting the return key. The last one restarts the computer, so hold down the OPTION key and try again.

Making progress—no more prohibitory sign. Two things left to try. Boot the machine normally, select System Preferences->Startup Disk->select the install disk, and click Restart.

If that doesn't work, then you'll have to retry with the RAM module removed.

BTW, I'm off to bed, so I won't be back for awhile. Good luck.
