iMAC/Macbook Pro crash everytime i plug in an Mbox 2

\

Sorry didnt know where to post this... so i would be very grateful if someone could help me.

I have a brand new iMac 20" and an mbox 2 running protools LE. Everytime i plug the Mbox into the machine it gives me the black screeen where it asks me to restart, i have not been able to get it working once and its very frustrating.

I went into the apple store and tried to do the same thing with a macbook pro, again it crashed the machine........ i connected it to a macbook and it wouldnt even recognise the mbox or give it power.

what am i doing wrong can anyone help me, has anyone esle seen this problem before?

Do you have the later version of 10.4.10? Apple had problems with the audio system in the first version. They released an audio driver update, and then put the 2 together.

Powered Firewire interfaces should not be hot-swapped according to several manufacturers, and doing so can cause permanent damage on rare occasions.

If neither of these apply, let us know.

Karn.

Hi there! that's an interesting issue you are raising about your Mbox2 not working with your imac. I've only just purchased a 20inch new imac (waiting for it to be delivered), and wish to use it with my mbox 2 (the original USB one). BUT i'm running protools LE 6.8 (admitedly getting old). Now I am curious as to wether this will run on the imac (it runs fine on my old powerbook G4). I know that digidesign have a tendency to make you pay for maintenance updates (shocking, yet an other well known computer brand tends to do that for their pro app. too, wink wink!).
Which version of Protools are you running?
I mainly use Logic nowerdays, as I deal with Midi and Plug ins a lot (let's face it, Protools is AMAZING with audio, but there's no way I'm gonna program anything in there!) with a virus TI, which can double (although i'd rather not!) as an audio interface. So if I have to go without the Mbox for a while i'll still be able to work, but i just wanna make sure I can make use of my gear, otherwise i'll just give up Protools altogether and get a Motu interface!

Just to confirm...

I bought an MBox 2 today to use on my 24 inch imac (tiger 10.4.10) and have experienced exactly the same issue. I was hoping it was a problem with my mbox, cuz that's easy to replace under warrantly, but it looks like it's an OS issue...

If I find any solutions I'll let you know, can you do like wise?

Best of luck!

Hi there,

Funny, exactly the same thing happens to me. I plug the MBox2 in and the Mac just dies. The same happens if I just try launching the Pro Tools software without the MBox plugged in.

I have a MacBook running 10.4.10 too and it runs Pro Tools with the very same MBox2 without a hitch.

Did you get anywhere with your iMac and MBox in the end? As soon as I can get it working on this beast I'll happily uninstall the software from the MacBook!

I'm new to this board. I'm having crashes, although infrequent, with Cubase4. I'm getting through sessions, but sometimes I get that dreaded black screen. I had an older PowerBook that NEVER crashed.

As relates to Digidesign, there's a ton of info on their site about incompatibilities with OSX 10.4.10. They also state that QuickTime 7.2 can cause problems on launch. Go to Digidesign's compatibility page if you haven't already and you'll see that they mention problems with newer versions of OSX and with the new intel iMacs. I haven't even tried to run my ProTools MPowered on my new Mac, because Digidesign state that they are still "testing" it. PT 7.4 has this new Elastic Time tool for time stretch that's straight crack and I want to use it, but I know PT isn't going to work properly on my new iMac.

I think the moves to intel and the new OS releases are killing the DAW world. Its great for mac and their products, but bad for the music world. You have to wonder if Apple is not forcing us to move to Logic. I've never used any computer other than a mac. But these new "monopoly" moves by them are not to my taste. I love macs not only because of their simplicity, but because they stood to be different. They seem to being trying to play the same old Microsoft game and it kind of *****. Don't mean to gripe, but I feel your pain and I think its deeper than we all think.

I have the same problem friends. Got a new IMAC , plug in my mbox and the computer went nuts. The Imac was already crashing by it self during the day. But the Mini Mbox made it worst. Going to replace IMAC 2morrow and hope for a better computer or a refund. This is becoming a joke. Digidesign is always trying to catch up with everybody else. And Apple ??? I should have read this forum before buying.

Good luck to all !

I had exactly same problem as others do in here.
But now I'm using mbox 2 without having computer freezing problem.
Here's what I did - though it might not be helpful for some.

Well, I installed Leopard first because I wanted to use Windows. (mbox 2 was working fine with Windows... how weird!!)
Now, mbox 2 is connected (to usb port besides line in port) and the computer doesn't crash. but it doesn't light itself up.
Since I have intel imac, I downloaded pro tools le 7.1.1.
In the folder, I opened up 'Read before install' file or something similar.
In that document, it clearly states that you have to connect mbox 2 to the usb port that's RIGHT NEXT TO POWER CONNECTION.
So I checked it out and that usb port is actually right next to firewire port. (well pretty close)
So I installed pro tools le 7.1.1.
Restarted the computer with mbox 2 connected.
Boila! Mbox 2 lights up finally!
I opened up pro tools and it WORKS!

Now, switching to different usb port is just plainly ridiculous but that's typical apple I guess.
Before I leave, here's my imac spec.

Intel iMac with black/stainless steel design.
20inch, 2.0 ghz intel core duo 2 cpu, 1g RAM, ATI Radeon HD2400.

BTW, check out appleinside.com for imac graphic firmware if you own imac 20/24 inch with ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro. It might help ease freezing problem. It might.

did any one find a solution to this problem? needless to say anymore but I have the same problem. It works fine on Leopard though, but some of my other hardwares are not compatible with it. And connecting it right next to the power doesn't help at all for me. the screen goes grey whenever mbox 2 is plugged in. I would appreciate the help.

Here is a new wrinkle on this issue. I have the Mbox 2 and Protools with DV toolkit.

I have been experiencing crashes in Final Cut Pro – the dreaded spinning umbrella – the worst. Force quite completely ineffectual. I have been to the Apple Store 3 times trying to trouble shoot. Finally, the lad behind the counter looked at the counsel log and noticed Protools seemed to be noted around the crash even though I am only running FCP.

Cutting to the chase, disconnecting the Mbox solved the problem. Now my problem is with the box. If anybody has any ideas how to solve this issue, I would be very grateful.

Tony
