MDP keyboard misses hits and skips letters

My MBP continues to miss letters as I write. There is a distinct delay between my pressing certain keyboard buttons and the response of the keyboard, which often results in truncated phrases. I wonder if anyone is experiencing a similar issue and if there is a way to fix it. Although I use an external keyboard most of the time, this is most annoying as it forces me to continue back correct documents and press excessively hard on the keyboard.

Mine too.. For me it seems to be the C key as well as the 5 key. I am a pretty fast typer and i hate having to go back and do way more spell checking than normal because my keyboard doesn't work right. I love the style of the key board and how it types, but it just doesn't recognize my "taps"

At first i thought it was because it was new. So I typed harder than I normally would and it didn't change. Is it dust behind the keys perhaps? I don't know.. but it sure is a pain... and slows my productivity.

I had a similar issue with mine, the keyboard problem was intermittant, and i went to the apple store a few times, but the problem would not occur at the store.
they suggested to keep a log of what happens and when it happens. The 3rd time I went back to the store (in a one week period), the technician decided to send my macbook pro to apple for repairs -

also, check to see if your keyboard is disabled when you are using the external keyboard - that happened with mine also, which is not normal functioning.

OK!!!! I think i figured it out! I got to thinking. This ***** and it is a huge problem. What basically happens when we go to a field and try to type. The first character is cut off, then the second one shows. So essentially it is a delay right? So that got me to thinking about delays as they pertain to the keyboard. Keyboards all have repeat rates, and there is usually a DELAY before that happens. So what if the delay was set to short, but because of a software defect, the "short" setting for the delay was uber short. So someone with decent typing skills would type fast enough, or.... hold the key long enough, for the computer to think that there is "about" to be a repeat in character thus creating that delay when it should have just typed a single letter. This would also hold true for the missing characters while typing in normal paragraphs as well. So far so good.

What are the settings for your keyboard repeat rates?
I had mine set to...

Key Repeat Rate: Fast
Delay Until Repeat: Short

I haven't played with every setting combination but when putting the delay to OFF, I have NOT... repeat NOT had an issue with the delay and missing the first letter. Hope this helps a lot of people. Mostly those that aren't really concerned with the keyboard repeat rate. w00t!

Your suggestion regarding keyboard settings didn't elp for me. I have the skippig letter problem so badly I've decided to get my old MacBook back (which never skipped a letter) and get rid of this one, wich is essentially useless for me without an external keybard. By the way, yu can see the skipped letters above-I am usually a very accurate typist.

I just "upgraded" from a PowerBook G4 to a MacBook Pro and I have the keyboard problem. Here's how to reproduce it: try striking a key very rapidly with a single finger. You'll find that if you strike it sharply and rapidly (i.e. really pound it quickly instead of pressing it) your keystroke will be ignored very time. It doesn't matter how hard you hit the key -- you can hit it hard enough to worry about damaging the keyboard -- if your hit is quick and sharp enough, the keystroke doesn't register.

It seems that the key must stay down for a period of time before the keystroke is registered, and this time period is much too long for fast typists.

Really really annoying.

I have the same problem.

Kestrokes seems to be ignored randomly!

I would like to take this oppurtinity to point out that THIS IS DIFFERENT FROM the ELP-problem that everyone keeps refering to!!! (I have that problem too, this is different!!)

I have found the following methods to be effective in reproducing this bug:

(..could come in handy in case you need to prove the bug (or flaw) exists to some one cough*apple*store*people*cough..)

Method 1:
Try pressing down two keys at once by pressing right between them. Try different combinations and different levels of pressure! For instance, when I press right between my J- and K-key nothing happends! If I keep my finger at certain angles or press hard I can usually get a K, sometimes even a J.

(For reference: on my PowerBook I always get both a J and a K regardless of angles and pressure - as long as the keys a pressed down the produce letters.)

Method 2:
This one is similar; Try pressing on the corners of keys with the very tip of your finger. For instance, on my keyboard almost all sqaure keys are unresponsive when pressed with on the corners of them.

(For reference: My PowerBook does not have this problem.)

Method 3:
Take a finger and rather quickly but firmly drag it across your keyboard top row (from Q to P). When I do that I get:

QWP

(I held down Shift or clarity.)
Results vary - but some letters are always missing!

(For reference: on my PowerBook I always get QWERTYUIOP no matter how quickly I do that!)

Maybe we could simply call this problem the QWP-problem - so that we can differ it from the ELP-problem?

I think this is clearly a hardware problem - in my opinion, those keyboards are flawed 😟
I hope Apple agrees with me. Hm, have anyone tried to get a new one yet?

Best Regards
/0scar

I do not think that the 'ELP!' problem is different from the ranom key missing problem.

On my keyboard especially fast/short keystrokes are skipped even if they are hard enough so they shold be recognized.

In this post you see 2 letters missing that were skipped by the keyboard. This is very annoying specially when writing software. You always have to back up and check. VERY OFTEN I type in Terminal.app d instead of cd and s instead of ls.

Anyway the location does not matter the key is:

FAST and SHORT keystrokes for me.

Yes, I think you're completely right. If I force myself to "type very careful and slow" the problem seems to vanish. Beside this is still not acceptable, your finding may help the people at Apple to track down the problem.
I wonder if the problem occurs in Bootcamp/Windows XP? Maybe those with a Windows installation can post their results here?
If the problem doesn't occur in Windows then it has to be a software problem.
