3rd party software to allow me to use Canon MF4150 scanner function

I bought a Canon MF4150 multifunction (fax/printer/scanner/copier) printer but I am unable to use the scanner function using the Canon software or what is in my computer already. Everything else works. Can someone help me figure out what I need to use the scanner?

PowerBook G4, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

You should be able to use your scanner in Mac OS X if you do it via the Image Capture application. Or, if that doesn't work, you can access the scanner through your image editing software's TWAIN features. (You will have to do some setting up, which I can't detail for you since it's based on specific applications you have on your computer).

When I open Image Capture it says it doesn't find any remote image capture devices or twain devices. I was previously using HP Scan Pro for my old HP scanner, so it does show that program (which also doesn't recognize the Canon MF4150). Vue Scan release notes state that for the MF4100 series it only supports PC, not Mac. So I am still stuck. Any suggestions?

I'm doing some research for you to see if I can give you an exact answer. In the meantime...

u can download the driver of ur printer from http://www.canon.com and extract to a folder (may be the downloaded file is a .exe file, but u can also extract it by WinRar or WinZip, etc.) then ur bonjour can use this extracted driver for ur printer.
p.s, the USB port of the AEBS can only support printer,
the scanner on the printer will not work at all. u should connect the USB of MP Printer to ur computer directly if u want scan something .

Well, I think you know this already. That's why you asked for a third party solution. I thought the solution (have you tried it yet?) might be to use the TWAIN built-in capability of Mac OS X, and since you said that Image Capture wasn't seeing your printer, thought that connecting your MF4150 via USB cable would be the next solution.

However, in all rounds of the web that I've searched, all come to the same conclusion. This model is indeed Mac compatible, but the scanner function is PC-only. (Stupid, huh? Not Apple's fault). And I think by "MP" that guy meant Multi-function Printer... left out the F in between for MFP.

Here it is from ITPro in the UK:

...Somewhat bizarrely, although the MF4150 is allegedly PC and Mac compatible, its scan function works on PC platforms only . Although there are Mac print and fax drivers for the MF4150, the bundled MF Toolbox scan software is PC only. Why only partially market a MFP in this way? It makes no sense, as it takes the 'multi' out of MFP...

I couldn't resist! All I'll say is that it puts a whole new term for MFP if you can't use the scanner function. =)' (Sorry).

Try this:

1) Open Image Capture, and choose Preferences in the file menu

2) On the screen that comes up, under the "General" tab, there is a section for "Scanner"

3) Check the box for "When Image Capture is launched, open scanner window"

4) If your Canon MF4150 is truly TWAIN compatible, Mac OS X should automatically recognize it (because of its built-in / native nature) and it will be usable as a scanner

Do you have Photoshop on your system? I keep hearing from people (reading, actually) who access their scanner via Photoshop. I know this is possible, but I have never used it like that because my scanner is an EPSON with Mac software available so I found no need to use Photoshop to access it.

That may be the other workaround if Image Capture isn't working for you.

Thank you for continuing to try to help resolve this. I checked the "when image capture is launched" box and it did not change. Turned off and on the program and computer. Unplugged the MFP and reattached, etc to see if it would recognize it at some point.

The computer doesn't see the scanner through Image Capture at all. I went to "Devices", clicked on "Browse Devices" and clicked on "Twain Devices" and there is nothing under it.

So... please let me know if there are any other options that you find.
I appreciate it very much.

Well, I returned my MF4150 and changed it for an HP 3055 instead, and I couldn't be happier. Installation on Mac OS X was a breeze, with all the print/scan/fax functions working straight off, even with the 3055 plugged into my ethernet router and accessed over wireless! HP obviously put more care than Canon into ensuring their products just work with minimal fuss. Only downside is the HP doesn't have automatic duplexing, but I figure the ability to scan to Mac AND plug my printer into the network more than make up for this. Too bad, because with a bit of extra effort on Canon's part, the MF4150 could have been a great product.

Hi Stan,

Can you confirm a few things for me, as I've just ordered the MF4150...

- You definitely have the MF4150 scanning to your mac through VueScan (it doesn't list the MF4150 as a supported scanner on its website)
- If yes to above, it is connected to your machine via USB, yes?
- Which version of OSX are you using?
- Did you have do anything tricky to get it working aside from install the VueScan software?

Thanks - I'd love to know how to get the scanner working upfront without having to figure it all out myself if I don't have to.

One solution to this problem. I am using Parallels Desktop 3.0 running Windows XP. The Windows OS does not matter. Go to the Edit => Virtual Machine on Parallels and Add a Parallel Port - USB in this case for a printer. Next time you launch Parallels it will find the new hardware and then you can configure it after that. Load the drivers as you would in a PC.

I was using Parallels anyway since I am recent convert to Mac after more than couple decades with a PC. Even if that were not the case, this is not a very prohibitive solution if you already own the printer. I like this printer and the Scanning software that came with the printer.
