unable to burn cd/ok to burn dvd

i am unable to burn iphoto and itunes to a cd, but I can burn a slideshow to dvd. It started suddenly. Thought maybe bad cd (even though other cd's in the pack worked just fine.) Got a different brand; same thing. For iTunes, this is the error message: "The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media; for iPhoto: "The burn to the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846 drive failed. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry." I've checked the hard drive memory; it shows "ok" under about this Mac. Any suggestions? (iDVD does just fine; I can burn the iphoto and itunes together without any problems as a slideshow)

Hi, I stumbled upon this thread because I am also having disc burning issues. My problem is similar to nojorising's. My SuperDrive is a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E. I can read and burn CD's without problems, but I cannot burn DVD's at all. Burning a DVD disc in the Finder gives the message "Burning the disc failed because an unexpected error occurred. (Error code 0x8002006E)."

An even more weird thing happens when I try to erase DVD+RW discs. When I insert a used disc and try to erase it in Disk Utility, the process seems to complete almost immediately, ending with OS X asking me if I want to mount the inserted blank disc in Finder. However, if I eject the disc and put it back in, everything is still on there. If instead of ejecting the disc I choose to go ahead and burn something as if Disk Utility has actually erased the disc, I get a laser power calibration error.

Everything was tested on a bunch of Memorex DVD+RW discs. I know they are the worst out there, but my MacBook Pro has been erasing and re-burning them for more than half of a year without problems. I find it unlikely that all of a sudden ALL 10+ of my Memorex DVD+RW's have gone bad.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.
