Im at my wits end.....

My iTunes and Quicktime have not been working for the past two weeks. I spent an hour last friday trying to follow thru one the step by steps only to find that it didnt work. Can someone please help me out WITHOUT sending me to another thread. I get the same message every time I try to open iTunes:

+iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close+

When I try to open Quicktime I get the same message but a different message from iTunes:

+Buffer overrun detected!+

+Program: C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QuickTimePlayer.exe+

+A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated.+

You need to say what steps you have tried otherwise it is hard to know where you are with this.

In general the buffer overrun problem in Quicktime is commonly associated with certain codec packs.
Have installed any of the following?
ACE & K-Lite mega codecs package, QT alternative, Storm codec

Also head for you control panel and try to start Quciktime preferences. Post the full text of any error message you get.

When I opened Quicktime Preferences it opened up just fine to my surprise. There are 7 tabs: Register, Audio, Browser, Update, Streaming, File Types, Advanced. All of them work fine when I click on them except for File Types. I get this message when I click on File Types:

An exception occurred while trying to run "C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\QuickTime.cpl",QuickTime"

OK, that error message suggests that you don't have the problem codec packs installed.

The first thing to try is a complete uninstall of Quicktime then installing the stand alone version.

First be sure you are free of malware - viruses and spyware

Download the standalone Quicktime:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html

Completely remove Quicktime using the method here - just do the QUicktime part:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93698

Then install the stand alone Quicktime,

If it works, you can check your iTunes to see if that works too,

In the directions it tells me to uninstall. I have tried to uninstall through Add or Remove Programs before and I get the same message every time I do so. When I try to uninstall it, I get this message:

+In order for QuickTime software to be updated, all running QuickTime applications will be shut down.+

I press the ok button, then I wait and I get this message:

+This QuickTime application cannot respond to the Quit request. It may be busy, waiting for a response from you, or it may have stopped executing.+

+Click Cancel to cancel the Quit request.+
+Click Terminate to close this application immediately. You will lose any unsaved information in this application.+
+Click Wait to give the application 15 seconds to finish what it is doing and then try to close the application again.+

I thought since QuickTime isnt working then it wouldnt be running. What should I do?
