"The iPod cannot be synced. The required disk cannot be found."

I'm on Windows XP, with the latest version of iTunes.
I've recently purchased an iPod Classic and am trying to sync it for the first time.
Everytime I try I get this message "The iPod "name" cannot be synced. The required disk cannot be found."

Does anyone have any ideas about what could be done?
I have restarted the computer numerous times and reinstalled iTunes.

Ok i had the EXACT same problem. Thx for all the help guys and i think i found a solution! Recently, i dloaded a pretty sweet XP skin that makes it look like vista. If you have ANYTHING like that it will screw up ur ipod no joke. I was ready to scream until i got directed to this page.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304996
And saw this paragraph
"This symptom may also be caused by software applications which change the appearance of Windows XP. Try deleting or removing any third-party Windows OS skins, Windows themes, or desktop mods that are installed to resolve the iTunes Error -50 issue when syncing your iPod to Windows XP."
One quick uninstall and reboot later... My ipod works perfectly amazingly fine. I have to share this with you guys, again thanks for all your help getting me on the right track!

And I get my iPod back, guess what? does the exact same thing, they just wasted 2 weeks doing nothing. Now they are sending me another box and replacing it outright. What a waste of time

I got an 80GB iPod last month and it worked for a while. I spent days building a music library in iTunes. Now it will not synch. IT gives me hard drive errors like others here have reported. I have tried all the fixes. I am worried it is a software glitch and that Apple will not help.

I am regretting that I bought this thing. I will try to synch with another computer at work today (with a small library). I do not want to have to rebuild the library and cover art... Big boo to Apple.

Got a 160GB ipod classic as a gift. Worked fine(ish) for a while then started not syncing etc. Lost a few years off my life in stress trying everthing I could for three weeks. Then I found this - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304996

Didn't like the idea of messing about with the registry but - fingers crossed it worked and my expensive paperweight is now pumping tunes into my much stressed brain.

Won't have to take it back now!

Same issue. I have 31,000 songs, and tried syncing...It would crap out after about 25 gigs for me. I was on the phone to support for an hour and a half, and finally, the product specialist said he thinks the ipod just "gets tired" trying to copy all that data. he had me do it in 10 - 20 gig increments, stop the sync, start it again. Took a while copying 130 gigs of music. Now I find out that 2,000 songs didn't even copy over to the ipod. This is bunk...I thought Apples and macs were supposed to "just work." I miss windows....

I'm having the same problem and it's driving me crazy! I've had my 80g ipod for a little over a month and now it will sync only 38 songs(before it wouldn't sync any song!). It first seems like it's working but then it says "The iPod cannot be synced. The required disk cannot be found". I tried reseting, restoring etc everything and nothing works. Before it didn't play some songs and sometimes it did, same thing with the pictures, it won't open some. I think I'm just going to go get it fixed or replaced because I don't think there's anything I can do about it. It's defective all over.

I had this issue with my iPod for about 2 weeks and it drove me barmy. Basically, I cured the problem by unplugging everything that was usb on the back of my pc and just plugged in the iPod usb cable. Hey presto, it worked sweet as a nut!!

Apparently, iPod's draw a lot of power from usb ports and maybe my other hardware gadgets were just competing with the iPod for a bit of jungle juice.

HTH, let us know how you get on
