Firewire not working on Macbook!

I have a Macbook. This is the first time I want to capture a movie but it does not recognize the camera via firewire. I did check with a HD external, the same result, nothing happened. I did reset PRAM & SMC without any success. I did run hardware test, nothing reported as failed.

Do you have any idea?

click on the blue apple at the left top corner > about this mac > more info

click on firewire and see it the system profiler recognize the device you plugged into.

if that camera is detected, then just fire up your iMovie and switch the button under the black screen area to camera icon instead of scissor icon.
make sure your camera is on vtr / playback mode and not in camera mode.

if camera or other device is not detected, check using other cable first, and if it still not mounted, visit apple and let them check it for you.

Good Luck.

i have no other firewire devices to check.

how long would it take for them to repair such a thing on a macbook if i brought it into the apple store?

Add my MacBook to the list of failed Firewire ports. Nothing is recognized by my Firewire port. I first discovered this when trying to use my external hard drive for backup. I tried other cables and other devices. It seems that the Firewire port is dead. Fortunately for me my hard drive is accessible by USB. I've looked around and it seems that this is a problem with no easy fix such as PRAM reset. If anyone has had the same thing happen and has any thoughts, please let me know. Thanks.

I have three devices with FW and two computer...macbook pro and old G5.

Plextor burner, Western Digital 1TB HD and a smaller 200 GB drive

Plextor has USB and FW 400
WD HD has USB, FW400 and FW800
Other drive has USB and FW400

USB from ANY of the devices work on both computers!

FW400 works to the G5 from ALL devices

FW400 DOES NOT WORK from any device to the MACBOOK PRO

FW800 DOES NOT WORK from WD HD to MACBOOK PRO

DOES that give anyone enough info to help us?

Thanks, --bill

I also have the same problems. Called Applecare and they told me that I had to take it for repairs. :-/

The Firewire doesn't seem to work when I try to connect my external HD.
The firewire Bus data is not shown on the System Profiler.

I also have a whole onset of problems with the battery and sleep mode; I'm waiting to see if anyone has an answer to those problems in my posts.

For most situations, a restart is sufficient. If the computer has stopped responding, try each one of these steps, one by one. Test in between steps to see if it has worked. If one step works, don't worry about the next, as you're up and running! Only go on to reset the SMC if you've tried all of the steps listed here and the computer still isn't working.

1. Force Quit (Option-Command-Escape)
2. Restart (Control-Command-Power)
3. Force Shut Down (press the power button for 10 seconds)

Only perform an SMC reset on the computer if none of the above steps resolved the situation. If this is the case, see below for instructions on locating the reset button or key combination for your model of computer. If your computer is earlier than the models listed here, see "Resetting PowerBook and iBook Power Management Unit (PMU)" or "PowerBook: Resetting Power Management Unit (PMU)".

MacBook, MacBook Pro

1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
3. Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
4. Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
5. Press the Power button to restart the computer.

Same problem. I recently upgraded from OS X 10.3.9 to 10.4, and then immediately 10.4.11, and I just recently found that my FireWire 400 port is not working. I thought it was my cable at first, but nothing is responding. Interestingly, my FireWire 800 port works, however I cannot use my camcorder via FW400.

Help very much needed. This is obviously a software issue.
