Trouble with log and capture and Canon XL2

I am trying to capture video from my Canon XL2. I've been pouring through manuals and my settings seem ok as far as I can tell. On the Log and Capture screen I get the VTR OK message on the bottom and I can control the camera with the mac. The problem is I am getting no video or audio coming through onto the computer. The preview screen shows color bars and the message "Preview Disabled" I haven't found a way to get an image through. Any help would be awesome. Thank you.

Go to Final Cut Pro/Audio/Video Settings...

Under the Capture Presets Tab select your preset and click the edit button

From that window make sure the Digitizer menu is set to DV Video and not None. Same with Device Settings for audio in mentioned tab window.

Another thing is from the L&C window make sure that in the capture settings tab the capture/input menu has the appropriate Audio/Video capture preset selected.

(Sorry for jumping into your post Ruddy)

Certified, your work around doesn't seem to help. When I go to edit capture settings the menu indicates (Missing) DV video. Also missing in audio. The deck must not be supported because underneath the digitizer menu the greyed out input menu has a greyed out deck AJ-YAD955G. I have the AJ-SD93 feeder deck. Firewire in system profiler sees the deck correctly as AJ-SD93. Maybe there is a firmare update for the deck?

I have checked what you said to check and those settings were correct. My problem remains a mystery. I saw somewhere else that sometimes Canon's have trouble working and use the Firewire basic on the settings, but that didn't work either. This is my first experience with a Canon product, could there be a Camera setting that needs to be changed? The Canon manual is not very informative.

Often in upgrading the OS, QT or FCP for some odd reason QT will get knocked slightly off kilter. This shows up when you try to log and capture in FCP (and get a device missing message) but the capture works fine in iMovie.

The usual solution it to force a full reinstall of QT.

This is how:

Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg

Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.

Run the Quicktime installer.

Reboot

Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)

Good luck.
