New Universal Dock refuses to charge from USB power adapter (tried 2 docks)

I recently purchased a Universal Dock (MB125G/A) with the intention of using it to charge my iPod Classic that is hooked up to my stereo. However, the ipod doesn't charge while seated in the dock and connected to a USB power adapter. If I plug the cable directly into the ipod directly, it charges - so I know the power adapter works. It's also not the ipod itself - I have tried my Nano and my iPhone as well - none of them charge. If I connect the dock to a computer rather than the USB power adapter, it charges - so the problem is only when using a USB power adapter.

I thought I just got a bad dock, so I exchanged it yesterday at my local store, but the new one has the same problem.

On the first page of the manual it says "Connect the Dock to a power outlet (using a USB Power adapter) and then place your iPod or iPhone in the Dock to charge the battery", so clearly it is supposed to work.

Does anyone use one of these docks to charge with a USB power adapter successfully?

I just bought a new iPod Nano for my Wife for Christmas as well as a new Universal docking station as well as Composite AV Cables to connect to our TV/stereo. I plugged it in the first time and thought the video was great seeing it on the TV, but was disappointed to not be able to see coverflow or any other video output when playing music - that portion I thought could have been great and was expecting (I don't know why) to see some video when playing music (so I wouldn't have to walk over to the iPod to see what tune was playing (it is my wife's iPod and we don't have all the same musical interests). A day later my wife commented that she needed her iPod charged and I told her she could charge it by just plugging into the dock. But after two hours the iPod was messed up and not charged! What I mean by messed-up? Well, all the coverflow pictures where gone (just a fuzzy image for each CD cover) and all of the games where GONE! That really ticked off my wife! I had to completely reset and completely re-sync the iPod from iTunes. None of the resets on the iPod would work!

Just wondering if anyone else had seen any similar problem?

Hey, I just got the new universal dock for my ipod, iphone, etc. I used to have an older dock in my car hardwired to the power wires from a cigarette lighter (12V I assume). Anyways, that worked great! the power turned on and off with the car so I wouldn't kill the battery. I switched that out for the new universal dock and it does not power get any power to my iPod anymore. Now I see that the dock is picky about what cord you plug it into. Well the cord I used was supposed to connect to a cigarette lights, so I don't know if it's firewire or USB, or anything at all. Any ideas? What about splicing a USB cord and connecting it to the cigarette lighter?
