when i get home from work late tonight i'll look into 'permissions'....
but before left home today i checked out Disk Utility and didn't notice
such a term. is it in the menu section? and by 'repair' you mean i may have to run disk aid? i wonder if before i do that if i should run the OS X system software first....

and oh, when i go to "about this Mac", it acknowledges that there is a dc burner built in.

No don't run any OS system software first.

Open Disk Utility. There will be a column on the left with 2 listings. One will show the manufacturer of the hard drive. Click on that and then on the First Aid tab. At the bottom left will appear "Verify Disk Permissions" and "Repair Disk Permissions" along with some instructions. Click on "Verify Disk Permissions" to check permissions. Click on "Repair Disk Permissions" to repair them--you may have to do this several times until permissions are verified.

As long as you are there, you may as well click the "Verify Disk" button and verify the disk too. If you get anything but "verified", you can repair it too by booting off of Install Disc #1 of the gray discs that originally came with your computer and navigate to the Disk Utility that is there.

If you need more information, please post back.

Good luck!

Disk with a "k" refers to your hard drive in your computer. Disc with a "c" refers to your CD. The disk you want to verify permissions on is your hard drive because it is possible that the permissions are messed up to a degree that your disc (the CD) won't mount on your desktop.

Your hard drive has its own set of complicated software which can get messed up. Disk Utility is what maintains and repairs this software for maximum performance. It is totally separate from your OS and other software. When I say to verify and repair if necessary both permissions and the disk, I mean the hard drive, not the CD.

The reason for starting with verifying both permissions and the disk is to make sure that there isn't a problem with permissions or the disk (hard drive) which is causing the problem with the CD. If you verify both permissions and the disk and still have the problem, please post back and we can chase it further. But this is just a logical first step to take, and it could even fix the problem.

Good luck!
