Just Bought a G4 Sawthooth

Just bought what I believe is a G4 Sawtooth. On the back it says:
Serial # XB021NBBJ2S; 500MHZ; 1MB cache; 256MB SDRAM; 20GM HD; ZIP/DVD.....128 16MB; 10-100T; Airport Card; Keyboard.....Family # M5183.

System Profiler says it's a G4 AGP Graphics; 100mhz bus speed; boot ROM version 3.2.4f1; no PCI cards; no parallel SCSI; ATA bus....Matshita DVD-ROM; Iomega ZIP 100 ATAPI.

I just opened it and noticed the HD was disconnected and the battery is missing. I also didn't get any manuals.

I've browsed Support>'Specifications' and xlr8yourmac trying to find manuals showing what the inside should look like. For instance, Support>Specifications says it should have SCSI, but I can't find any SCSI connections inside nor out. I'd like to find out if it's complete or if parts are missing.

Any information on figuring out exactly what I have and tips about working on it would be greatly appreciated.

One, two, one, two.
I've been doing mental pushup's just waiting for something to do - LOL

The envelope, please.
And, the answer issss, mmmm - Yes!
Tiger will run fine with that, as will most basic Applications. Get more RAM when you can afford it, it probably should be your next purchase, though.

David:

I remember saying something about maxing RAM being a good thing on a G4, with a caveat about overkill on a G5... RAM is one of the best ways to pep up a computer, short of a logic board upgrade. It really will make a big difference, unless all one does is surf the internet and send/receive mail, and other non-intensive processor tasks. 512MB will do okay, but you'd be surprised at what another 512MB will do. Whatever you do, go for the largest modules, unless someone's giving away free 128MB or 256MB modules you can use. Otherwise, when you decide to max it out, you'll be the one giving away the smaller modules...

Haven't heard from Dave (FangSuede) for awhile; he's probably hacking together a water-cooled Apple ll-C or something as we speak!

Re: archiving... just mail the thread to yourself and set a mail rule to put it in a Discussions folder. You can mail a particular post, or choose the option to mail the entire thread. Click the envelope icon above the post to initiate the email. All but a relatively minimal number of the threads here stay for a long time, obviously for server space reasons...

ps: I just amended this post. Dave's Back!

Dave:

Drop and give me fifty! Then proceed around the block with you QS over your head. (No, not the Cube, maggot.) And repeat, 'Aint no use in lookin back, Apple's got my ipod's back...' ... ad infinitum. Or until your 9800 overheats your PSU.
😉

Gary and Dave:

Okay, I get the message, finally. Get more RAM first. I'll start saving. Saw on Bloomberg the other day, CFO of Sandisk; predicts chip prices are gonna drop by 50% this coming year. Maybe she was just talking about flash memory chips. Wonder if the concept would extend to RAM chips? I believe OWC dropped the price of their 512 for G4's by a dollar or two the other day.

I tried the envelope at the top and also tried File>mail contents of this page and only got the last post, not the whole thread. Then tried File>mail link to this page. Got most but not all the thread. Within the message body, clicked on View All and got sent here. So, Gary, are you just emailing certain posts? Was hoping I could get the whole shebang and then whittle out my inane remarks and questions; and keep the good stuff from yall. 😀

Heading to the recycle center with at least $3 worth of beer...er...soda cans and start toward a more meaningful and fullfulling RAM experience.

Have a great day, yall!

Hope at least one of you is still 'listening'. 😀

I've been watching Ebay for video cards. One seller,' im-a-mac-user', says the FX5200 won't play nice in a Sawtooth and Tiger. He acts like he knows what he's talking about because he says he tries all the cards he sells in his own puters.

Don't get me wrong, please! Not trying to undermine yall's advice, but would appreciate your thoughts this seller's comments.

Hi David,
We're around.
I know who you are referring to, the Ebay seller fellow. The 5200 ROM he is using is unstable in certain conditions. That particular card is a very weak performer and I wouldn't waste any time considering it. It's main attraction has always been that it fits in a Cube, otherwise it is not worth having.

Re: FX 5200/5500 video cards. I have been involved (in a minor way) with testing these cards from the beginning of their 'flashing' inception. I work with the guy that wrote the "Flashing Guidelines" on StrangeDogs.com. The 5200's are a middle of the road card that can view 'Core Image' on the latest MacOSX. They are cheap. There are only a few people that know the latest ROM that will enable 'most' of the 5200's capabilities, including stable DVI output for large LCD's. Your Seller is not one of these people, he sell cards with the older ROM. They work okay for smaller monitors and lesser applications and are fine for a lot of people's needs. --I've tested a 5200 with that ROM, it's slow.

Look here for performance evaluations. The Cube runs the same Bus, CPU and memory as the Sawtooth, except it has an ADC slot.

So, there you have it, do you want 'Core'? Buy a better card, you'll be much happier in the long run. Want a fast card but don't need 'Core, look here.

Dave:

Just asking, cause on Oct 20, in this thread, the 5200 was recommended.

Heck, I don't know if I need 'Core. I'm kinda set on getting X-Plane, but not much on gaming otherwise. Wow! That GF4 Titanium sounds like a screamer. How bout that same seller's (yoyo) 9200? I know you're gonna advise the GF4, but thought I'd ask. (chuckle..)

Thinkin bout FangSuede; how bout FangNauga? Never mind. I digress.

And if Costa sees this thread he's really gonna yell at me cause he's helping me with RAM in another thread.
:-o

Thx!

David,
Just asking, cause on Oct 20, in this thread, the 5200 was recommended.
Well, after re-reading that post, if what I said sounded like a recommendation, I apologize, it wasn't. I have tested other 5200's since.

I also only suggested the GF 4 Ti because it's a good card, runs most every monitor and is a decent price. The 9200 is a far slower card (no Core), but still faster than a 5200. In addition, the Seller is a very reputable vendor. The 9700 or 9800 are still the best.

My recommendation is, as always, get the very most you can afford, it will lessen the chances you'll be sorry later.

Hi Dave:

No, it wasn't you that suggested the 5200. 🙂

Yeah, 'yoyo' is great about answering my questions too.

I reckon you've talked me into it. I mean, that's what credit cards are for. And it's plug&play...cool.

One more question. If, say, a year from now I get a Quicksilver; will the GF4 Ti fit in it? Seems it will, but just making sure.

Thanks a bunch,

David
