iTunes freezes while downloading

iTunes freezes moments after it starts downloading purchases.

One album I pre-purchased didnt download on the release date so I downloaded it Tuesday afternoon after checking purchases and believing my first order didnt go through.

Could this be the problem?

Every other aspect of iTunes is okay, I have to check for purchases before I get a problem

iTunes support was very helpful and enabled my download of the songs again. As with the first time I had this problem, the files downloaded just fine. As was the case previously, the old songs were not deleted from my library playlist--but the files were deleted. They were not on my desktop nor in the Trash. I had to remove the files from the playlist by hand. There were duplicate entries in my library although only one was playable.

I have sent support a request to know why the second time seems to be the charm. I will post what I learn.

I received an email from Apple support yesterday to do the same thing. I tried and all files downloaded properly, but as with you it did not remove the file with DRM from my library, but it was a quick delete to fix that. I'll be emailing them back to let them know that the files downloaded, but my library wasn't properly updated.
