E mail on Road Runner

Recently I have been getting sporadic messages CANNOT SEND MAIL The connection to the outgoing server "smtp-server.cfl.rr.com" failed. This does not happen all the time but in the last 2 days it has been happening on both mine and my wife's phone to the point we can not send mail, however periodically mail is recieved. I have tried Brighthouse (the e mail service provider) as well as ATT and Apple. No one seems to have a solid answer. Currently my main e mail account is on the PC we sync to and is attached to Outlook. Any similar experiences or clues as to what might be going on? Thanks for any help

jborn,

Have you noticed that when you cannot send mail, are you on EDGE or Wi-Fi? A lot of email providers do not allow you to send mail when you are outside of their network (i.e. you can send mail at home on your personal Wi-Fi connection, but cannot send mail on EDGE or other Wi-Fi networks). Some ISP's have different outgoing servers you need to use when you are outside of their network, so you may want to call Brighthouse and see if they have different "travel settings."

This article also explains some of the frequent causes of sending mail issues and also offers some alternative solutions:

Hope this helps,

Jennifer,

Thank you for your help. I will check with Brighthouse but my recollection is that it has happened sporadically on both EDGE and wifi but it has also worked fine at times on both EDGE and wifi.

Thanks Again

I finally got this to work. My ISP is roadrunner. Could not send from my roadrunner account via EDGE. Didn't want to switch back and forth. SO...

Opened a Gmail account. Went into settings and set the Gmail account to send as my roadrunner account as default. Had to wait for confirmation email from Gmail. Went into my iPhone mail settings for the roadrunner account. Left incoming mail server alone. Changed outgoing mail server to "smtp.gmail.com" with username as "myusername@gmail.com" (you have to include the @gmail.com) and entered my password. In advanced, set outgoing uses SSL to ON with authentication as "Password". Now I can send from both EDGE and WiFi and the sent mail has my roadrunner address.

I have a similar problem. email works on a g4, but not on either two imacs on my local network. also talked with everyone possible, brighthouse, apple, etc. no answers. mail works to and from my isp, but nothing else with the imacs. My hunch is wireless network conenctions has something to do with it or I may have a problem running panther on the g4 and tiger on the imacs. they have programs that find "conflicts" like conflict catcher and system check, and others. About to try resetting entire system because the email worked for a while on both imacs and then stopped. Not sure how this relates to iphone, but resetting to your originals factory settings may help, if you can. Add on and plug ins added after use may cause conflicts within the system, corrupting files which may be in use when your problem occurs. good luck.
