record HV20 'live' instead of from tape using firewire?

I can capture from a tape in the Canon HV20 using FCP6.

Is it possible to record 'live' (not from tape) from the HV20 using firewire, or is this only possible with HDMI?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.10), RME FireFace 400

gogiangigo - When I searched for 'LIVE RECORDING' as suggested in that link, the only thread I found that seemed to actually tell how to do this mentioned:

----
Match the sequence settings to the cam setting

Open the log and capture window.

See the device to noncontrollable.

Click capture now and esc to stop.
-----
However, I've been unable to get this to work.

The Command-8 'Log & Capture" simply asks for a file name, and then aborts with 'the end of tape has been encountered'

I tried setting the 'device control preset' to non-controllable (from HDV firewire used to capture from tape), but got the same message.

The 'Log & Capture' window never opens with any additional tabs or the 'capture' button (as the on-line docs seem to suggest should be there, even for non-controllable).

So, I must be missing something very obvious?

Hi Les Caudle,
I cannot tell from what you say what right or wrong you are doing, with the exception that I would
first set device to non-controllable and after log and capture.
I don't do what you are trying to do.
I don't think that +live recording+ is a wise choice. Your computer could crash anytime, your 5.1 audio would convert to a 2 channels stereo, an error may occur and if that happens...the magic (supposing therte's some) is gone! Too many inconvenient circumstances!
I totally agree with what David Bogie Chq-1 sais in that thread.

Don't think quantity but quality video recording (the benefit of live recording is honestly irrelevant) and let the tape set its clock for that very purpose!

Best,
gig

gig - sorry my msg was unclear, but I had tried changing the device to non-controllable and then tried capturing.

As I'm considering getting an HDMI card to capture directly from the HV20, I wanted to experiment with the workflow of capturing directly.

And - I have some 'play' shots I'd like to take - point the camera at the 4 diamond doves that live in a hexagonal aquarium besides my desk for a few hours, and be able to srub thu the footage quickly to find the amusing things they do every now and then (they are like the three stooges plus 1).

Anyone recording directly from an HV20 using Firewire? Is the setup very different from recording using HDMI (which I'll probably need to learn how to do)?
