Managing Apple Loops files?

How do I selectively remove 20,000+ Apple Loop files from my library? The assets pane in the Loop Browser program doesn't remove the selected loop file from the folder when I click on the minus sign, it only stops displaying it. Of my 20,000+ third party Apple Loops about 100 or so pertain to my music only. So how do I jettison the rest for a clean sweep before I start adding my own Apple Loops? I'd like to save HD space and avoid the thousands of false positive loop matches on searches.

Can I just go into the Library / Application Support / Garageband / Apple Loops folder and manually drag out the loop files I know I will never need? Or do I need to hunt down and manually nuke the corresponding entry too in the corresponding Apple Loops Index text file?

Perhaps I could easier search the index textfiles for the 100 loop entries I actually want to keep and cut and paste them into a new Index textfile... or move the 100 loops I like into the now empty "SingleFiles" folder which doesn't seem to require an index textfile... but then, after I start converting and adding my own Apple Loops, I'll be soon brimming with 3000+ Apple Loops in that lonely folder... hmmm.

Hey George - forgive me - I'm new to "discussions" I wasn't aware that this was a response to an earlier post of mine re: getting Logic to "See" Apple Loops re-located to an external drive.

I actually already use Live - with rewire - in the P Too,s environ. Yeah - it's wonderful, and everything else you say. I find though that different tools have a way of leading me down different paths creatively; sometimes I go first to Live, sometimes Pro Tools, some times Pro tools and then open Live via rewire etc. Logic, which is somewhat new to me, has the same residual effect, and I find that searching for loops in Loop Browser, even though it's a little more tedious, causes me to come up with things - not better or worse, just different then in other programs.

Anyway, Shaun gave me some good advice, and some of that advice was to refer to a description of yours of the "Apple Loops XML File" and it's location. I'm afraid I don't know what that is, but that I was not able to get a result when searching for anything by that name - is it named something else?

Thanks,

Jon

Hey Jon - thanks!

I have never run 7.2 on my g4, except for the express version when I was evaluating Mac DAW's. When I purchased Logic Pro (I'm a recent Sonar/PC convert) it was just when 8 was released, so they sent me 8 instead of 7.2.

Logic 8 does not run 'quickly' on my G4 (1.67ghz/2gb ram), but it's definitely useable. I can do everthing I need to do: my projects typically have about 15-20 tracks and some 3rd party plugs.

I only really get frustrated when I'm using the loop browser to find loops. I have just about all the packs available (still looking for the vocal one btw) and some other stuff so finding and filtering loops takes too long and shows the beachball sometimes.

In hindsite, based on what I've read, I probably should have stuck with 7.2.x as everyone says it runs very well on G4's, but the flash and hoo-ha about 8 caught me. I will be glad that I've got 8 when I upgrade to a macbook pro next year.

Hope that helps a bit.

Hey Shaun (and George)

Just wanted to let you guys know that I was able to get a disk and re-install my version of Logic 7 (application only) dragged my apple loops folders from my external drive onto the loops browser window and everything works perfectly. I'd love to know what went wrong, but I'm just glad I'm back up and running.

Thanks for all your excellent advice -

Jon

Wow. Who would have thought that this thread will grow into a storm while I'm away for a few days (trying to select the best EXS24 successor for Ableton... it's much harder to find an old Halion for $50 than an old Ableton... wish I could keep the EXS24 as an AU plugin.)

JDubd, I'm glad the time delay problem vanished. The XML file you inquired about is the System HD/Username/Library/Audio/Apple Loops Index/Search Index *.txt file, if you are still curious.

I totally concur that one's tool influences one's creative flow. Ableton does it too, but less because it's streamlined. Tracks are hardwired to channels and there's no Environment. (YESSS!) In my book, whatever will help you communicate what you want with the fewest mouse clicks is my winner. Then again, it's just my 2 cents.

I ultimately settled into using Ableton 5 with Kontakt 2, and all my loop issues were solved beyond my wildest dreams.

I still open my Logic Pro often to look up things, I didn't wave bye to it. I certainly got my money's worth out of it, already. EXS24 saved me about 1400 hours of CD-Rom shuffling. compared to reading my discs in my Akai CD3000 and Emu ESI.

I happy to hear you found your Nirvana George - I don't think many people do! I have some questions about Kontakt if you have a minute...

- does it manage midi files in any way - can I build a playlist of (say) midi drum sequences to play with Kontakt samples and have it play through them in order?

- can I hook up my controller and have Kontakt record the midi session?

Nov 27, 2007 1:47 AM in response to shamca

Kontakt 2 has a module called Script Editor which deals with MIDI, but it's as complex as learning a computer programming language (and I quoted this from its manual.) It reminds me of ActionScript editing in DreamWeaver.

What you described however exactly fits what Ableton 5 does, gracefully and intuitively. So while Kontakt 2 isn't your answer by itself, running Kontakt 2 as a plugin inside Ableton 5 (like I do) will fulfill your wish list. Or, you could just get Ableton 5 by itself and use its Impulse drum sampler if you like its sounds. Or Ableton 6 with Ableton Sampler if you don't, and want to import your own drum samples.

The reason I personally keep using Kontakt 2 (besides that I scored one cheap 🙂 is that I have all kinds of East West, and Zero-G collections, and with Kontakt I don't need to drag their player plugins around, I just play those libraries from Kontakt 2. 🙂

Helpful info, thank you George. I have a copy of Ableton lite somewhere that I got with one of my keyboards. I'm going to locate it and install it. Maybe I can relieve some of my midi whoas.

One last question - of your 20,000 assets I'm sure you must have an 'ethnic' library or two...which one do you find most inspiring?

Great threading with you Mr. Kopeczky.

Cheers,
Shaun

If we define "ethnic" as coming from a musical culture foreign to me, then the "ethnic" library that inspires me the most is a collection of rave sounds. If we constrain "ethnic" to mean centuries old, non-US instruments, once you heard more than thirty talking drums, baglamas, bouzoukis, or anklungs from various libraries, the difference becomes more or less a blur, and it pretty much boils down to what YOU can do with either of those to inspire people.

I know, there is this perennial dream of finding that elusive exotic sound collection from Gondwana that will enlighten and inspire us into composing the best composition of the world. The eternal allure of the unknown; the reason why people always visualized heaven in places they haven't visited. This is why I moved to Hawaii too, it's an island heaven, right? Yet, once you drive past the inhabited areas, it's mostly dry brushes on rocky hills. This is a perfect illustration of my answer: heaven and its cousin which you seek, inspiration, is something WE create, mostly.

Hi George, hope all is well.

Guess what I'm demo-ing at the moment? I ran into some walls creatively in Logic trying to time stretch/beat match audio files and was pointed (again) to Ableton Live. I thought of this thread and wanted to catch up with you and see how you're liking the application? Any opinions on their Warp functionality?

Cheers,
Shaun

Hello Shaun,

Sorry for the late reply, nowadays I rarely check this thread. Yep, I'm still plodding along with Ableton Live 5.0 and Kontakt 2, and quite happily too since Kontakt 2 reads my EXS24 programs on the fly. It also plays all my Zero-G, East-West and other sound libraries too without having to bother with their dedicated plugins which often caused validation headaches in Logic.

Warp in Live works. If a jump into Live still makes you hesitate, I heard of an AU plugin called "Phatmatik Pro" which supposedly offers better loop-handling that the Apple Loop Browser, and still works IN Logic. Unfortunately, I know nothing more about it than this, I haven't tried it.

Sometimes when I convert yet another of my ethnic Akai CD-Rom libraries to EXS, I remember your earlier inquiry, what's the best. The answer, 200 Roms later, is still the same: it's pretty much a level field. From what I experienced, the newer $$$, xx Gigabyte ethnic (and other) sound libraries have no special advantage over some of the better Akai / Emu Roms. Quite a few of them are the same Akai files, resaved to 24-bit Kontakt format, with a higher price tag, and the file convertability lost.

Today I just found an answer to how to install Garageband JamPack Apple Loops selectively in OSX 10.4

Insert the JamPack DVD, find the GarageBand JamPack.pkg installer file on it, right click that file and select Show Package Contents from the popup menu. You get a window labeled Contents, and in it one of the files is Archive.pax.gz. Drag that 2 Gigabyte Archive.pax.gz file to a hard drive where it can be expanded. (BOMArchiveHelper.app, the free OSX thingy expands it just fine.)

The archive will expand into a folder called Library, which will contain all the individual loop files in its Application Support/GarageBand/Apple Loops for GarageBand Jam Pack subfolder. You can play through the loop files in OSX 10.4 while in column view. Select the loops you like, and drag them over the loops utility to install only those out of the kajillion. Et voila, done.

So far I tried this only with JamPack 1, but it should work similarly with the others too.

I'm sure glad I found this thread sooner rather than later. I"m a Logic newbie and just learned that loops on another partition are given the option for copy or index in place.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301279

Is there any way to force this option even when copying loops from the same partition? I guess the sad way would be to copy the loops to another partition and then copy them to logic but I"m hoping there's a more elegant way.

Cheers
