crash crash CRASH

Anyone else's Keynote crashing all of the time?

It happens a ridiculous amount...am I the only one?

It can't be the presentation or the machines - we have done 5 different presentations in the past two weeks on 3 different machines. Two were G4 and one was a laptop, each presentation created on a different machine with a different version of Keynote.

Keynote has crashed at least 3 times a day every day - today it has crashed SEVEN times.
Yes, seven.

It has happened during completely different operations.
Today:
1 - Inserting an image from 'Insert'-> 'choose' pulldown....crash
2 - After saving, hit 'play' button....crash
3 - Tried to resize text....crash
4 - Inserted shape and tried to resize...crash
5 - Tried to reorder builds in the 'more options' drawer (only two builds there), when I pulled the second one underneath the first...crash
6 - Duplicated a slide, and after seeing the rainbow wheel of death forever...crash
7 - Tried applying a different master slide to a presentation...crash.

All of these crashes have happened with different presentations on different machines in different locations for similar reasons. It is never the same reason twice in a row. The presentations have ranged from 12 slides to 70 slides.

The absolutely most frustrating part has been the "saving".
Even though I have been saving more frequently because I am terrified I will lose all my work (since it has happened so much already) at times my "saves" have not gone through. Keynote will crash, and when I reopen the file is not where it was when I last saved.
Hours and hours of work down the drain.

What is going on?
We have the most updated version, yaddah, yaddah...computers are in great working order. The only problem is the keynote.
We can't afford to have this happen during a show. We are very high profile, very well known company, and to deal with this is really frustrating since keynote is the best looking program out there.

I have isolated the problem of Keynote crashing to embedded quicktime movies running as backgrounds. When set to loop back and forth the first loop caused crashing. Deleting all the backgrounds has made Keynote sable.

Response and addition to this post. The font size in the notes area changes randomly, if you up the size from say, 12 to 14 point, save the job, return to it later, you are back to 12 point again, but not on every slide/notes page. Keynote 08 crashed on me during the font size change operation, where the notes text remained editable but the tool bar across the top became greyed out and nothing was changeable. Eventually the program stopped working completely.

In response to a later post, I don't have movies of any type in this presentation, however I have been using transitions and timings during the show build. I use Option S regularly now. Incidentally the show I am working on started out in Powerpoint, was imported to the Open Office Powerpoint alike and edited, then finally ended up in Keynote 08. It looks best in Keynote 08!

Just looking at the version numbers for the respondents in this thread would suggest that your crashing problems will not be solved by upgrading to Leopard. I have had only the one crash on 10.4.11 and others on Leopard are crashing more often. Conclusion; save your money for a little while, unless you want the spreadsheet application.

Well, I was having crashes, but figured out that the italics, aka oblique, were causing a crash with what looks to be a proof reader. I was using helvetica, so YMMV.

I am having very frequent crashes using Leopard and KN 4.0.1. In my case it is definitely text related. Presentations will reproducibly crash when trying to display specific text items (possibly imported from presentations made with previous versions of KN). The crash log reports an error with the SFWordProcessing framework.

My solution is to identify offending blocks of text (tedious, as the only way of detecting them is by making KN crash), removing them and re-inserting them by typing (not by copy-paste, as this also copies the bug).

I hope Apple fix this soon!

I have had similar problems. I was able to resolve the crash and save problem by reinstalling iWork 08 and then not allowing the computer to update to the newest Keynote version. This is obviously not a permanent solution, but it at least helped. There are obviously a number of Keynote problems as becomes obvious by going through the various issues in the forum.

KN 4.0.1 continually crashing because of font issue with 10.5.1?? SFwordprocessing plug-in error is the primary cause of my "unexpectedly quit" message. But KN has also crashed without this error message. It kept crashing on a slide with only jpeg, 500k image. Can anyone explain that? I have done disk permissions, scanned for unusual fonts etc.... This is terrible...as ALL my KN presentation are crashing (did not do this with 06!) and I HAVE TO PRESENT VISUAL MATERIAL FOR LIVING!!! If anyone can post some guidance on this problem, I would appreciate it. I'm dead in the water.

FYI-

I went through an entire 137 slide presentation and changed all fonts from Helvetica to Arial and the presentation now works without crashing. I saw in another post that the Helvetica font is causing problems.... why? I dunno.... very strange.
