iPhone headphone port is sharp, has cut me twice already

Just wanted to bring this to everyones attention since it's happened to me twice already, and find out if anyone else has had this happen.

I usually place my iPhone in my pocket with the headphone port facing upwards. Twice so far I've reached to get the phone out of my pocket and the exposed edges around the headphone port have cut my index finger. I really wish I were making this up, but sadly it's the truth.

I'm sure this won't be the last time I do this. Is this something that Apple is aware of? Or am I the only one to ever cut his finger on a cellphone? 🙂

If you file it down it may be considered to be damage to the iPhone if and when some more catastrophic thing should occur and you need to take it back to the Apple store. Filing will leave a mark on the case.

Second, why would you want to spend money on a case. I am sure that it was not part of the bargain when you obtained the iPhone.

Take it back to the store, show them where the area is uneven and let them fix it or replace the iPhone.

If they file it, make sure you tell them before they file it, that you want a document from them that says they did the filing so that you do not get caught at a later date.

The term defective has to do with the finished product, not necessarily the working of the product.

Think of buying a shiny new sports car for $100K and finding that the special metallic paint job had a bubble on the driver's door. Would you accept the car or tell them to get you a new car. That is a defect that has nothing to do whether the car will reach 125MPH on the straight-away.

For what it's worth, I found that this aspect of a sharp edge to be a plus (although I've never cut myself). I have an Incase nylon folio that I use daily. I grasp my iPhone with two finger to slip it out of the case, and the port allows me to get a firm grasp of the top and bottom.

As a result, I've never dropped it and the screen stays cleaner longer.

You may want to consider a case, sleeve or skin. Some skins even come with a rubber cap to plug the hole, preventing dust from getting in, and your getting cut.

Hope that helps and that you're otherwise enjoying your iPhone.

I don't care too much for getting a case but I would like some kind of rubber plug to go in the headphone port. I'm really surprised that one wasn't included with the phone.

A few people in the office have iPhones (because they played with mine and wanted one!) so I'm going to check out theirs and see if the edges are sharp enough to do any finger slicing.

I have similar issue but with the stainless bezel around the front of the iPhone. I have "shaved" my finger(s) multiple times on the inside edge of the bezel.
(Inside being the edge that meets the aluminum)

I can confirm I noticed this the other week also - not sharp enough to cut me, without trying, but sharp enough to be a problem.

I for one haven't bought a $5 case because they turn something beautiful into something cheap. It's the same reason people pay extra for metallic bumpers/fenders (rather than the much more practical plastic ones) when they buy a new car. I admit, its form over function but if you can afford an iPhone, you can probably afford the risk.

I find the audio jack quite safe on mine but inhospitable to any other audio jack leads than the provided ones.
