The icon for my hard drive is disappeared off my desktop and for the life of me can't figure out how to get it back!! If I don't have an alias for something on my desktop I can't get to it because I can't get into my hard drive.
From the
Finder contextual menu, on the Finder Menu Bar, select
Preferences.
In the window that opens, click on
General.
Under
Show these items on the Desktop:, make sure that
Hard disks is checked.
Can each of you who had the HD disappear after installing Leopard post the method you used to install 10.5:
1) Erase and Install
2) Archive and install
3) Update
Also, can you see your Dock? If so, can you click-hold on some item until you get the "Show in Finder" message. That should open a Finder window. Are the drives still missing from the sidebar if you do that?
I just had the same issue with Leopard (main drive icon's gone), the weird thing is that Leopard was working fine (except for several Internet drop-offs) and just suddenly after using the Dual G5 2.0 as a Target disk mode, when I restarted the Macintosh HD icon was gone, but I had all accessibility to the files.
Bare Bones Super Get Info solved the issue as you indicated.
Super Get Info solved the problem for me too. (The 14 day free trail should be good enough to get you back in business, however, please consider the small fee to register the app since BareBones saved your butt... - no, I don't work for them, they just rock.)
A couple of reasons this may have HAPPENED to me in the first place (in case this is helpful to anyone) I was in a secondary user account and was trying to copy and replace the hard drive ICON right before it happened, and also, I renamed the hard drive right after installing leopard, and then yesterday, renamed it to a third name, and then back to the second name. (I was doing some trainings, and thought it'd be helpful to my users to see a different name there than what it was - made sense in context at the time...)
Also, I have a TIP for those of you going the Super Get Info route.
How do you FIND your hard drive to make it visible?
- Choose File --> Open,
- then click "Applications" in the side bar,
- and then go into the file path drop down menu at the top of the open file dialog box (The one that now says Applications since you clicked Applications) and look for your hard drive in that menu... - - select it
- and then click the Open Button once your hard drive name is in the top of the menu (the "name" of the open file dialog box window, in other words.)
All you have to do is type this script into Script Editor.
tell application "System Events"
set visible of disk "Mac HD" to true
end tell
tell application "Finder" to quit
delay 1
tell application "Finder" to launch
