Installation of 10.5 went well and everything seems to be working well. Very quick too.
However, I have a horrible sleep issue going on here which happens every time.
When I put my mac to sleep the screen slowly fades to white in a most ugly pixilated way.
A black screen follows then sleep happens. On wakeup, there is more white pixilated behaviour then a black screen. Only a reboot will bring it back. I tried to repair permissions but disk utility just sits there on the barber shop progress bar and does nothing.
Any ideas what is going on here? Any fix? Thanks in advance.
Done! A little -r after the cp command did the trick. The iMac now sleeps and wakes perfectly. The display sleeps properly too, so I could re-enable that in Display Preferences.
BUT....the iMac was set to use the Flurry screensaver, which is now decidedly not a flurry, more a stuttering stop-motion laser light-show. Guess that'll be the lack of quartz-extreme? iChat video still seems to work. YouTube playback is pretty much unwatchable though, and it wasn't before. SO, it may be that I revert to the Leopard drivers after all....
OSX seems really quite reliant on Quartz Extreme for general use - everything got very sluggish and choppy when it was disabled. Another oddity I found - the Tiger drivers seemed to make the iMac refuse to mount either of my Sony cameras when I connected them. This may be some random coincidence, but as soon as I copied back the Leopard drivers, the cameras mounted their memory sticks and iPhoto opened as previously. I decided not to test out any further oddities, but stick with the highly usable Leopard installation I had (and forget about sleep...)

Ati Radeon problems and solution...
There is a missing extension in System/Library/Extensions/AppleNDRV(folder).
For those who have Ati Radeon 9600 PC and Mac Edition (maybe for other card also), ATI ROM Xtender is missing in Leopard causing sleep and display problems. The AppleNDVR folder contain only two extensions (AtiDriver.bundle and ATIRuntimeDriver.bundle). You need ATI ROM Xtender from Tiger to have a correct display. Just put it in the folder and restart.
Reading this thread and another, I see most problems described are regarding G5 Macs. Just in case there are any brave G4 users who installed Leopard out there. I installed Leopard yesterday (New Years Day 2008) and discovered that my monitors were rather dark, the resolution was changed and System Preferences would NOT let me change any settings, had strange intermittent artifacts on my screen, couldn't select text in Firefox and had to wait long periods of time to type into text boxes. In fact my system was running very slow. Then I found this thread, copied *ATI ROM Xtender* from my backed up Tiger drive (thanks to Carbon Copy Cloner) to my Leopard drive's
System/Library/Extensions/AppleNDRV(folder) and restarted.
Things seem to be working well. So hang in there G4 users. Thanks to all who support these forums!
I followed the steps carefully but kept getting kernel panics on reboot. I reset it to the Leopard drivers and disabled sleep. Hopefully, 10.5.2 will fix this problem. There's at least one "supported" machine that uses the GeForce2 MX (the 2001 G4 Quicksilver 867MHz) so we have a chance that Apple will fix it.
The sleep problem with the 800MHz iMac G4 (and possibly all GeForce 2 MX systems) went away after I installed the 10.5.2 update and Graphics update. But it introduced a new problem with my old Wacom Graphire tablet. When I wake from sleep, the tablet is not recognized anymore.
Just to add another datapoint... on my iMac 800mhz (17" lampshade), i've updated it to 10.5.2 and the additional Leopard Graphics update that showed up. STILL have the same issue where after waking from sleep, it 'seems' like the CPU/OS wakes (I hear the HD spin up and fan). but the screen stays black. The ONLY way to get the screen back on is to either cut power, or hold down the power button for 5 secs till it forces it to shut down, then I can power back up.
I'd be interested to hear if others have had success or not with this update. Generally I am OK shutting it down at night, however I have a few things that load at startup including a huge iTunes library which takes 5 min for iTunes to come up, so I'd obviously rather be able to sleep it. Never did try the driver replacement described here because I was worried about side-effects.
bhagemann, same here. 10.5.2 and graphics update installed. Graphic melting gone and seems to go to sleep normally. Desktop appears for a split second then black. Only option is power down.
Maybe 10.5.3 will fix it......for now it's trusty old 10.4.11.
and one who has helped both ATI and Apple solve a 6 month problem, of trying to get my ATI Radeon 9600 PRO video card to work with 10.5
i read your email today after an Apple Tech directed me to it (at the end of a 50 minute phone call, just before he was about to give up), and i found that if i go to ATI's site and RE-download the 4.5.7 driver (that i installed when i first bought this video card in January 2006) and reinstall it, that it does indeed add the ATI ROM Xtender file to the other 2 in the AppleNDVR folder
and that after running Disc Utility to repair the permissions my mac running 10.5.2 now, for th first time, does not leave stuttering trails when using the scroll-wheel of the mighty mouse, nor are there small cursor blocks left when i move the mouse, AND the mac goes to sleep AND wakes up
this is great news, since i had been about to throw the video card away, having spent MANY hours with various tech people trying to resolve this problem
thank you thank you
btw i have also sent a link to your explanation to ATI who have been saying for 6 months that there was no problem, and, of course, now Apple tech know of it too
No it doesn't! I cannot confirm that 10.5.2 (with the following graphics driver update) does resolve the sleep problem on my iMac G4 800MHz 17". Sleep is working fine but after wake up the screen is restored less than a second and then it switches to a black screen.
After the wake up I'm able to use screen sharing to remote control the iMac for a restart and of course for anything else but with a black screen. Shutdown by cutting the power is also an option...
Yes it does on my G4 15" 800MHz iMac. Perhaps the 17" has a different graphics card, but my 15" is working absolutely fine now. Wakes from sleep with no display problems whatsoever.
update: installed 10.5.3. Upon wake from sleep everything seems normal. However, the imac is completely frozen...... Bummer.....tried all the usual quick fix stuff. No good. Any ideas anyone?
Wow, it seems Apple has been done it's homework. The 10.5.3 included graphic update solves the wake up issue for me. I've been applied the 10.5.3 stand alone update and now my Leopard unsupported iMac works pretty good 🙂. The recent time machine update (HD connect by firewire) tooks 2 hours. Doesn't matter 🙂 I'm happy!
