Graphic Glitches

I am getting slight graphical glitches after installing Leopard. They appear at random and quickly correct themselves but they are definitely there. It seems to occur most when using the scroll wheel. Anyone else experiencing this? My Mac Pro has the ATI Radeon X1900 graphics card.

My card got so bad waiting for 8800 vapor to form into actual matter that i simply had to order a replacement x1900 - i was afraid to lose access to the mac for a week or so if the card ultimately gave me the big ole grand FU of blackness. i considered buying a 7300 and selling the mac, but in the end, i decided to not lose my overall investment and get the same dang card and hope to hades it doesn't fail again (my 25% EPP discount helped with my decision but $300 is still too dang much for this POS).

I've got 23 minutes uptime and not a glitch yet! I've turned off smcfancontrol. my firmware and other specs are identical to Mr. FUBAR x1900, and i couldn't see a single reference to rev. 2 on the card (not that i ever got confirmation of that here) but it did have a different P/N sticker on the card (New: 102A5203031, Old: 102A5202950). I'm not likely to willingly buy an ATI card again, which is too bad, because i have enjoyed their products for many years.

I'm having the same issues on an iMac Core Duo 2 2.16ghz w/ the ATI X1600. It appears to be software related, as the only way I've been able to rectify the issue (ie, get rid of the lines on whatever window they are on) is to quit/kill the app whose windows are peppered with the artificating.

I'm pretty sure this issue started with 10.5. More specifically, I think it started with either 10.5.1 or 10.5.2 for me.

I've got 18 months left on my AppleCare. I'm hesitant to call Apple about it because 1) it is almost positively software related, and 2) it is intermittent. Some days it happens constantly, other times, it doesn't happen at all. I have no idea what the trigger is, only that it is really annoying.

Just to report, I'm getting these same graphic glitches as shown in the dganimation images; with increasing frequency, leading to full-on lockups from which I have to hard restart the machine.

Hardware Monitor shows the internal temperature to consistently be around 60c when this starts happening. Quite often, the lockup will happen when something 3D-accelerated kicks in, such as Cover Flow or a dialog sheet "swooshing" out of a window's titlebar. Once, I got the dreaded black "You must restart your Mac" screen, but recently, I've had the screen just go solid black, or just have the machine completely freeze.

I'm working quite a lot with Rosetta apps (old version of Adobe Creative Suite) and I wonder if this is adding to the strain on the machine.

It's getting to the point that I need to take the machine in for service, but as a freelancer, I can ill afford the downtime...I need to buy a 2nd machine now.

It's a first-generation 17" MacBook Pro, 2.16GHz maxed out with 2GB RAM - the graphics card is an X1600.

This picture describes my graphics problems with leopard.

It usually occurs when playing Warcraft III. I checked the temperatures, but they aren't especially high when it goes on.

The only way to get out of this is to reboot the machine.

Does anyone have a clue what could make this happen?. I have 2x1GB RAM and external hard drive (maxtor). No other special hardware installed.

Should I send my Mac to Apple?

So I have seen and experienced these issues going back to mid-Tiger. I am going to make some suppositions, so if anyone has the opportunity to test and verify, that would be helpful.

The heart of the issue appears to be overloading the graphics card. Whether that is in Leopard because of the new Core features, or in Tiger with high end graphics software and hardware is irrelevant. I have seen it almost exclusively on 30" displays. Most users here are reporting it on either 30" displays or dual 20+ displays, which implies it is pushing the limits of the graphics controller in some way. My most current experience with this issue is on 3 different Mac Pro systems. All have X1900 cards. All worked fine with single 23" displays attached. All have sparkling pixels now (intermittently) since replacing the 23" displays with 30" displays. All are running 10.4.11 (NOT Leopard). All are used as video post workstations, so pushing lots of graphics (SD and HD video/graphics files).

I will test my theory with a single system - replace the X1900XT and see if the issues go away. Fortunately, all of my systems are covered under APP.
