Macbook Pro keyboard does not work

After a straigh-forward upgrade, the keyboard does not work. The trackpad works.

I did an upgrade install and then encountered the Sidetrack problem described above on my MB -- the keyboard didn't work.

I was able to avoid a new installation by booting off of Leopard CD, then during the installtion options dialog, I went to the top menu bar. It actually offered to run a shell (or terminal, I don't remember the exact wording).

Once the shell launched, I ran:

mount -uw

to mount the hard disk. Then navigated to
/System/Library/Extensions/ on the Macintosh HD (available after I ran 'mount')
by typing
cd /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/System/Library/Extensions/

then did: rm -f SideTrack.kext

Rebooted and everything worked like a charm.

Hope that helps,

Sidetrack is not the whole story for this issue.

I have the same problem with my MacBook; i.e., laptop keyboard input sporadically stops, then comes back. But I have never had Sidetrack installed.

The most recent change to my MacBook is Leopard installation. And since I did a clean install, that suggests that possibly Leopard can also trigger this problem.

I'm a bit confused by the status of this problem - that is, whether third-party add-ons are wholly to blame. I have the same thing on my MacBook Pro. Ever since installing Leopard, the keyboard occasionally becomes unresponsive after awakening from sleep. The trackpad works OK. Sometimes the keyboard springs into life after 30 seconds or so, sometimes a restart is the only thing that will do anything.

I do NOT have Sidetrack, Intellimouse, or anything else installed.

Am I right that I'm not alone in this predicament, that it must be Leopard, that it's currently unresolved, and that we're all hoping 10.5.1 will be out very soon and solve the problem?

I just bought my MacBook yesterday. It works great and I'm loving it. However, I started noticing in the evening that my keyboard would "freeze" when I tried to type in an URL in my browser and/or typing in chat programs. I tried quitting all other apps but it didn't help. Then after about a minute or 2, the keyboard would start working again.

While I could not enter any key strokes, everything else worked fine. I was able to use my trackpad and Logitech wireless mouse opening up other applications with no problem.

This problem has happened a few times today so far.

I do not have SideTrack installed, either.

Any ideas, Apple? I'm glad I'm not the only one having this issue.

After migrating to my new MacBook, from a PowerBook G4, I discovered the following issue;

I found that the internal keyboard would not work properly. At first I thought it was a hardware problem, but the keyboard would work on login, and then fail once the login completed. And by fail I mean that only the Tab, Delete, Command, Option, & the F# keys would work, all of the character keys would not work.

I created a new user account and found the keyboard would continue to work when logged in to that account, but only after a re-start, if I just logged out, without a re-start, from the "old" account to the new, the keyboard would not work.

In the migrated account, I also tried an external usb keyboard, which worked okay.

At this point I called AppleCare, and they had me delete the keyboard preferences, and any other preferences having to do with the keyboard.

These still did not solve the problem. AppleCare's solution, at this point, was to migrate, manually, to the new user, by copying various "Library" folders from the old user, to the new user, and manually configuring the new user with my old set up.

I'm still not sure where the problem lies, but this seems to have worked, with a lot of effort manually porting over preferences, and setups.

My guess is that there was a particular preference, probably having something to do with international settings, that disabled those keys on the keyboard. My old machine used standard US keyboard layout. I did use Logitech Control Center, (for a trackball), Wacom Tablet, MouseWorks, (for a Macally, I think, trackball), and Flip4Mac preference panes, which were also deleted. Perhaps if I went through and tried to find the particular plists for one or all of those, that may have also solved the problem.

Hello everyone,

it's always reassuring to discover that other people experience the same problem... not so reassuring to find out that currently no solution exists.
I'm in the "no 3rd party app" causing the problem. 2.4 Ghz MBP, running 10.5. The problem started happening a week ago (maybe sooner, logically if the problem is tied to Leopard, i upgraded on the very 26th november). It is not an electrical problem, since if the keyboard freezes with caps-lock, the light stays on. It won't turn off if you tap that key again, though...

The simple redaction of this little entry took me over 10 minutes between the waking and sleeping of the keyboard. Not a very productive machine! I plan to go to an Apple Repair Center later today (I live in Switzerland, we don't have shiny AppleStores 'roud here!).

Maybe a lead: it seems the problem only happens with the AC adapter plugged in. Is it the same with you people?
