It just doesn't work. Apple is screwing us when it comes to Front Row. Such nonsense that people who buy more expensive hardware (Mac mini) get less (media) functionality than Apple TV.
The 'funny' thing is that Plex is able to get album art from a remote source... there must be a way to create a plugin that does this? I am not a coder but just thinking out loud here...
The difference is that the folks at Plex are trying.
Here, the related AppleTV is "a hobby," to quote Jobs. Front Row is even less developed.
Each time I configure my content in iTunes I discover some new inconsistency or hard limitation between it and FR. Don't see that anyone in Cupertino cares.
This is still an ongoing issue from what I can tell with no end in site. Has anyone e-mailed Steve Jobs directly on this one? He's been known to reply and/or get someone to fix these types of issues.
I also found this thread looking for a solution. I'm a new Mac user and I've noticed that when using Front Row with the Apple Remote on my iMac many of the covers are missing. I've checked my iTunes library and all cover art is perfect.
I don't understand why some covers appear and others don't.
I dropped the movie file in iTunes, opend the info and went to Artwork tap, here I dropped the image/cover.
I then moved the file out from iTunes to my movie folder, and then Front Row was displaying the image/cover.
I also tried to move the movie file(only the movie) to a usbkey, and copy it to the movie folder on my other mac, start up Front Row, and image/cover is still on the movie.
And here is a possible pointer to the reason Artwork doesn't work... if anyone can figure out how to use this info...
Front Row on the local machine doesn't require iTunes to be running. Front Row does access the iTunes file structure, but doesn't use all the iTunes info. I have several TV shows that are filed as such in iTunes, but show as Movies in Front Row.
On the remote machine, it requires that iTunes is running on the host, with file sharing on. Again, iTunes isn't required to be running on the remote machine.
I suspect that the Remote Front Row isn't receiving info in the required format from the host iTunes - hence the missing artwork?
