Bad DVD batch confirmed by Apple!

After countless attempts to install Leopard tonight with frozen screens after starting on the Leopard DVD I've just received confirmation from a very helpful Apple support person that some DVD's are apparently bad, causing a major meltdown as evident in this forum tonight. Apple will send me a new DVD since going back to the Apple store in Miami, where I bought my copy, will likely result in the same result. So to all of you with "blue screens" and other non-working install DVD's I hope this information is useful... That's all folks, let's see if Leopard is what it's cranked up to be sometime in the next week or whenever that new DVD shows up:-)) Well, not much to complain about, stuff happens!

I've gone through **** and back with this upgrade. Infinitely more agro than any OS 9 install or even the oS X public betas. I will have to return my DVD to the Apple store for a new copy, which I hope will provide a positive ending to my hours of struggle with the cat known as Leopard.

Upgrading a 1GHz Al 15' Powerbook from 10.4.11 to 10.5.1. Plenty of tested RAM 2GB, 100GB HD with 20gb Free space - thorough checks for correct permissions and directories with disk tools and Diskwarrior.

My first attempt was to upgrade my 10.4.11 install, but the machine hung during the process twice, then kernel panicked the 3rd time. This is after the install program has checked the integrity of the DVD and did not report any faults. I then mounted the HD through firewire on my desktop. had a heck of a time erasing the drive - something about the drive being in use, and 8 hours later, when I finally was able to get to the end of a 10.5 install on a freshly formatted HD, I was greeted with the following:

INSTALL FAILED

Mac OS X could not be installed on your computer

The source media you are installing from is damaged. try installing from a different copy of the source media or contact the manufacturer for a replacement.

Click Restart to restart your computer and try installing again.

I hope I can get some relief with a new copy, but in the meantime, I'm going back to Tiger wishing I hadn't wasted an entire Saturday trying to get to the bottom of this. There is NO WAY I'm gonna risk taking down my desktop until I can get at least ONE successful install accomplished.
